Boxing: Fury vs Schwarz Betting Odds and Pick

Fury vs Schwarz Betting Odds

Although it’s not the fight we are hoping for, Tyson “Gypsy King” Fury is back in action as he squares off against Tom Schwarz on June 15 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Nevada. It was expected that Fury would play back his epic split-decision draw with WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, but talks fell through and Fury has decided to fight Schwarz. The Gypsy King is a -3000 favorite with the German, Schwarz, coming back at +1100.

Tyson Fury vs Tom Schwarz

Fury (-3000) returned to the squared circle in June 2018 following a nearly three-year layoff since winning the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, The Ring and lineal heavyweight titles against Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015. The England native dealt with mental health issues and a drug and alcohol addiction in those three years before cleaning himself up and earning a title fight. Gypsy King earned two tune-up fights before his split-decision draw with Deontay Wilder in December.

The 30-year-old brings into this bout an undefeated record of 27-0-1, with 19 wins coming by knockout. Fury is arguably the best true boxer in the heavyweight division, using outstanding head movement and footwork to make his opponents miss their strikes while picking them apart with stiff jabs. The former champ doesn’t have tremendous power behind his punches but is very efficient and, despite his size, is very hard to hit.

Schwarz (+1100) is laying his perfect 24-0 record on the line as he makes his United States debut. The German native is also looking to extend his streak of six consecutive bouts that have not gone to the judges’ scorecards, with five ending in a knockout and one ending in a disqualification. The 24-year-old most recently earned a second-round knockout to retain his WBO Inter-Continental heavyweight title.

Schwarz has decent knockout power with 16 of his 24 professional wins ending in that manner. He does a good job extending on his punches with accuracy and works well behind his jab. However, he doesn’t have tremendous footwork to find clean entries but rather capitalizes when his foes stand still.

This is a massive step up in competition for Schwarz and I think he is going to be outclassed in this fight. Fury is a master at making his opponents miss, including against Wilder when the champ only landed 17 percent of his strikes. Gypsy King’s herky-jerky style makes him incredibly difficult to be aggressive against and it masks his strikes with this style, not knowing when the punches are coming.

Prediction: Tyson Fury (-3000) via knockout (-215)
