Boxing: Porter vs Ugas Betting Odds and Pick

Porter vs Ugas Betting Odds

The WBC welterweight title is up for grabs at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California this Saturday as Shawn “Showtime” Porter defends his strap vs Yordenis Ugas. Porter is making his first title defense since winning the belt in September of last year and is a -360 favorite to retain his title, while Ugas is searching for his ninth consecutive win and is coming back as a +270 underdog.

Shawn Porter vs Yordenis Ugas

Porter (-360) has rebounded from his unanimous decision loss to Keith Thurman for the WBA welterweight title in 2016 to pick up three straight wins, including winning the WBC welterweight strap against Danny Garcia. Overall, Showtime brings a record of 29-2-1 into this fight with 17 wins coming by knockout.

The 31-year-old is a very aggressive fighter who marches forward throwing wild strikes looking to get into a phone booth and throw hands. The biggest issue for this wild brawling type of fight is that it leaves him open to eating some shots, as happened several times in his Keith Thurman loss. That being said, he’s never been knocked out in his career so he can take a punch.

Ugas (+270) bounced back from two losses in a row in 2014 with eight straight wins heading into this fight. Overall, the Cuba native has a 23-3 record with 11 wins coming by knockout and all three of his losses coming by decision. This is the first time the 32-year-old has fought for a title.

He is a very patient fighter, only really letting his hands fly when his opponent is throwing his hands at a close distance. Ugas has really good head movement and uses his left hand well with a jab and a lead hook. I find that he overextends on some strikes and they are a little slow, which allows his opponents to dip out of the way.

Two polar opposite fighters enter the ring on Saturday as Porter is going to bring the fight to Ugas, who’d rather a slower more tactical bout. I think Porter’s speed is going to overwhelm Ugas in this bout but I would be concerned that if he is frequently eating shots that his speed may slow in the later rounds – if it gets there.

Prediction: Shawn Porter (-360) via knockout
