Canelo Alvarez vs Rocky Fielding Betting Odds and Prediction

Alvarez vs Fielding Betting Odds

After handing Gennady Golovkin his first professional loss in September, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is returning to the ring but in a new weight division as he moves up to super middleweight to take on Rocky “From Stocky” Fielding for the WBA regular super-middleweight title. Even with the change in weight divisions, Alvarez is a -2000 favorite with Fielding coming back at +900.

Canelo closed as an underdog in each of his last two fights, both against Golovkin, with the first bout ending in a draw and the second with Alvarez having his hand raised. Prior to those underdog fights, he was favored in three straight fights with an average closing line of -550. Meanwhile, Fielding has been favored in five of his last six bouts with an average closing line of -1467 and was only an underdog in his last fight vs Tyron Zeuge in which he earned a fifth-round TKO to win the WBA regular super-middleweight title. The odds for this fight are exactly what I expected.

Breaking down Canelo vs Fielding

Alvarez (-2000) is a terrific defensive boxer who makes his money on fantastic counterpunching. The Mexico native moves around the ring flawlessly and entices his opponents to throw punches while using his head movement to avoid strikes. However, in Canelo’s last fight, he said he would meet GGG in the middle and stand toe to toe and he did exactly that, pushing the pace and being more the aggressor, and it paid off as he earned the split-decision victory. His opponents will now have to take notice as the 28-year-old has the options of sitting back and countering or being the aggressor and dishing out the damage.

Fielding (+900) is making his first professional fight in the U.S., having had the majority of his fights in England, and it’ll be interesting how he handles the big lights at Madison Square Garden. The England native is quite a bit bigger than Alvarez, standing four inches taller, and has a 4.5-inch reach advantage, but he lacks true knockout power in his hands. The 31-year-old has a 27-1 professional record with 15 wins coming by knockout. Much like Alvarez, the orthodox fighter likes to work the body early and often to carry him over his opponents in the later rounds.

Canelo, the No. 3 pound-for-pound boxer in the world, dissects his opponents in the ring and makes the necessary changes to put them away. This is a big step up in competition for Fielding as well as a much bigger venue for the England native. Fielding will have to choose his shots wisely and use his long reach to jab Canelo and keep him off balance.
