Alvarez vs Ryder Preview: Who Will Win?

The Cinco de Mayo boxing card is always a marquee event in the sport, but will it be another automatic victory for the red-haired combat sports phenom?

How Alvarez Wins

Canelo has no true weaknesses. The 32-year-old loves sliding into the pocket, where he's somehow able to land consistently but also dodge any damage coming the other way.

His hand speed isn't elite, however Alvarez makes up for it with excellent movement and smart punch selection, particularly shots to the midsection. His upper body is very twitchy, which, paired with his anvil chin, keeps him safe at all times.

Alvarez wins this fight by getting dressed and walking to the ring. Ryder has no chance.

How Ryder Wins

Ryder won't win but he might put a scare into Alvarez fans for a few moments during this 12-round bout. The Englishman is tough — they don't call him "The Gorilla" for no reason — and he also owns a longer reach than Alvarez,

The 34-year-old will do his best by pushing forward and using his snappy jabs and hooks. Ryder has some heavy hands (18 KOs), but he'll need to get his paws on Alvarez (which is never easy), while also dodging any deceptive counter-attacks.

Canelo Alvarez vs John Ryder Pick

There seems to be an expectation this fight will end early. Maybe the swirling hometown Mayan energy will elevate Canelo to new heights?

Either way, I'm more comfortable laying a wager on Alvarez by decision at +275. The value is there.

Pick: Alvarez by decision (+275)
