Instead of the highly anticipated rematch with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin will take on Vanes Martirosyan on May 5. Golovkin is a hefty -3000 favorite with Martirosyan coming back at +1100.
Golovkin was originally scheduled to face Alvarez in a rematch following their controversial draw back in November 2017 but as the fight was drawing near, Canelo tested positive for Clenbuterol. Though Alvarez maintains that it was due to tainted meat, he chose to withdraw from the bout.
That allowed Martirosyan to step in on fairly short notice for an opportunity to challenge one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world. Aside from the short notice, Martirosyan will also be fighting a much bigger opponent, as the American-Armenian has fought his entire career at light middleweight.
As the odds suggest, this should be a cakewalk for Golovkin. The drop-off in talent between Alvarez and Martirosyan is so massive that I don’t believe there is a word in the English language to properly describe it. We have seen weirder things in boxing but Martirosyan is expected to be a warm body for Golovkin to decimate while waiting for his rematch with Alvarez.
