LSU odds: Tyrann Mathieu dismissal impact

LSU kicked star corner and punt returner Tyrann Mathieu off the team on Friday, but the Tigers remained among the top favorites to win the BCS title at the sportsbooks.

LSU is listed at around 5/1 to win the national championship at most sportsbooks in Vegas and online, with USC and Alabama slightly ahead of the Tigers in places.
Mathieu is a difference-maker on defense and special teams, but it’s rare that oddsmakers will make any type of significant adjustment with the loss of a cornerback/kick returner. Deion Sanders and maybe Charles Woodson in his prime at Michigan are two possible exceptions to that rule.
Mathieu was the favorite among defensive players to win the Heisman Trophy; he was at 40/1 at Bovada. LSU’s season win total is set at 10.5 with varying juice, and the Tigers are 33-point favorites in their season opener against North Texas in Baton Rouge.
