Miami Dolphins Season Odds Preview

Miami was one of the NFL’s busiest teams this offseason, adding impact players in WR Mike Wallace and LB Danell Ellerbe and trading up to draft defensive end hybrid Dion Jordan. With the New England Patriots looking more vulnerable than usual, the future could be now for the Miami Dolphins; but to take the step from potential to contender, Miami will need a great season out of sophomore quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Tannehill has the talent to be a great quarterback in the NFL, but how quickly he can take that step will determine how much of a Wild Card (or potentially AFC East title) threat the Dolphins are.

Miami Dolphins 2012-2013 Season Odds

The Dolphins stumbled through another season last year, finishing 6-10 and effectively ending the Tony Sparano era. Sparano was fired near the end of last season and after a brief search the Dolphins named former Green Bay offensive coordinator Joe Philbin their new head coacj.

Odds to win AFC East: +1500
Regular Season Win Total: 7 (Over +135)
Props: NFL Off ROTY odds Ryan Tannehill 20/1

Unfortunately for Philbin he won't have the same kind of weapons in Miami he had in Green Bay. The Dolphins are also making a change at quarterback with Chad Henne out. The new starter should be either Matt Moore or David Garrard, depending who wins the job in the preseason. Miami also drafted Ryan Tannehill with the eighth pick in the draft and he's their new QB of the future.

Whoever is the QB he won't have much of a proven receiving corps. After Brandon Marshall was traded to Chicago the top dogs in Miami are now Davone Bess and Brian Hartline. Chad Johnson quickly wore out his welcome and was released following more off-field trouble.

The running game remains in the hands of Reggie Bush after a breakout season that saw him rush for over 1000 yards for the first time. Look for Daniel Thomas to also get a fair share of snaps as well.

On defense the Dolphins are switching to a 4-3 scheme after ranking 15th (345.1 yards per game) overall in the league last season. The Dolphins were great against the run, ranking third overall (95.5 yards per game), but their pass defense was non-existent at times, ranking 25th (249.5 yards per game).

The Dolphins are clearly in rebuild mode, relying on veteran quarterbacks to bridge the gap until Tannehill is ready to take over. Another sub .500 record appears likely for a Dolphins team that lacks the star power on either side of the ball to challenge in the AFC East.

Miami Dolphins 2011-2012 Season Odds Preview

Miami finished 7-9 for the second straight season last year, finishing ahead of Buffalo and behind New England and New York in the AFC East. As the odds heading into the season dictate, that’s exactly where Miami is projected to finish again this year.

The Dolphins have the defense to be a successful team, but the offense hasn’t quite been there over the last few seasons. With plenty of new faces on that side of the ball this year, Miami is hoping to buck the trend; but hanging with New England and New York is a very tall order.

Chad Henne did throw for 3,301 yards and 15 touchdowns last season, but those numbers were overshadowed by his glaring 18 interceptions. When the Dolphins are at their best, they are running the ball well and getting smart, mistake-free play from the quarterback; something they didn’t get on a consistent enough basis from Henne last year. Miami hopes he can turn the corner this year, but brought in Matt Moore as an insurance policy if he doesn’t.

Out are Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams, in are Reggie Bush and rookie Daniel Thomas in the running game. Both Bush and Thomas possess outstanding speed, but neither has experience as a feature back; how well they step up will play a big role in Miami’s success this season.

The defense finished in the top ten in both pass defense (209.3 yards per game) and rush defense (100.1 yards per game) last season, and without much significant turnover should be able to replicate those numbers in 2011. Jason Taylor returns after a brief stint with the New York Jets, adding some nice depth to Miami’s front seven.

If Henne or Moore lock down the quarterback position, and Bush and Thomas play to their potential, the Dolphins could find a way to steal the division like they did back in 2008. That’s a long shot though, and a finish around 8-8 is probably more realistic.
