New York Giants Season Odds Preview

New York cooled off after a strong start to finish the 2012 season on a 3-5 SU and ATS skid, falling short of the postseason after winning the Super Bowl one year ago. Even with personnel turnover on both sides of the ball, the Giants look to have adequate replacements ready to go. If the Giants bounce back on defense this season, that should be the key to putting them over the top in the NFC East; but if the defense struggles again, it could come down to an all out free-for-all for the division title in 2013.

New York Giants 2012-2013 Season Odds

The New Giants winning the Super Bowl was pretty amazing looking back on it now. At one point last season they had lost four straight to sit at 6-6 with the playoffs all but an afterthought. However, they won three-of-four to sneak into the playoffs and pulled off major upsets over Green Bay, San Francisco and New England to win another title.

Odds to win NFC East: +225
Regular Season Win Total: 9 (Over even)
Props: NFL MVP Odds Eli Manning 18/1

Can they do it again? In the highly competitive NFC East it will be incredibly tough. To do it they'll need their offense to soar again. The Giants, somewhat surprisingly owned the No. 8 offense in the league last season, averaging 385.1 yards per game.

Eli Manning had arguably the best season of his career last year, leading the Giants to the No. 5 (295.9 yards per game) passing attack in the league. Manning passed for a career-high 4933 yards with 29 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Victor Cruz had a breakout season with 1536 yards and nine touchdowns and Hakeem Nicks was dominant when healthy.

The Giants running game's success last season depended heavily on the health of Ahmad Bradshaw. He rushed for 659 yards on 171 carries and needs to stay healthy this season after the departure of backup Brandon Jacobs.

The Giants have had a reputation for having a smash mouth defense in recent years, but last year they weren't a top unit. New York ranked 27th on defense last season, allowing 376.4 yards per game. Despite an excellent pass rush that includes Justin Tuck, Jason Pierre-Paul and Osi Umenyiora the Giants were 29th against the pass last season. With a number of games this season against lethal passing attacks, including Green Bay, New Orleans and Dallas the Giants will need to improve on that this season.

New York Giants 2011-2012 Season Odds Preview

The Giants start the season at +300 money on the NFC East futures odds menu, but the question marks about the offense probably makes that an unattractive wager.

Eli Manning connected well (and often) with Hakeem Nicks last season and that partnership should blossom further in 2011. But can Mario Manningham, Domenik Hixon, and a crew of WRs that are hardly battle-hardened carry the Giants for the long haul?

Manning has a favorable schedule to work with, as six of their first seven games look winnable (a road game at the Eagles is the exception). If they get some momentum and confidence early, they could challenge for the division and possibly win it if the ‘Dream Team’ in green falters.

The backfield is solid and should give Manning time and options. Ahmad Bradshaw is a thoroughbred at tailback and Brandon Jacobs is the straight-ahead Clydesdale that is the perfect complement to the Giants’ ground game horsepower.

But Travis Beckum, with just 21 career catches, is No. 1 on the depth chart at TE. Can he and the backups manage the blocking and third-down receiving needed to keep the chains moving?

But bigger than any question mark around the offense is the question mark around DE Osi Umenyiora. He first demanded a trade and sat out part of training camp, then required surgery which will keep him out of action until September or later.

Without his run-stuffing and QB-harassing activity at DE, the Giants could end up being a shootout team each week – piling up points on offense and watching them pile them up on defense.
