The spread of the coronavirus, or COVID-19, has dominated headlines in 2020, and now it’s officially severely impacted the North American sports world.

Gobert Tests Positive for Coronavirus

On Wednesday, Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the disease, prompting the NBA to suspend the 2019-20 season indefinitely.

Gobert, who wasn’t expected to play in Wednesday’s matchup with the Oklahoma City Thunder, wasn’t at Chesapeake Energy Arena as the teams were sent to the locker room just seconds before the scheduled tipoff. But the Frenchman played against the Toronto Raptors at home on Monday, which has caused mass concern in the Association. Multiple teams who recently faced the Jazz were in quarantine overnight on Wednesday, and some could be in isolation for up to two weeks.

With the NBA on a temporary hiatus, odds are out on when the league will resume. At Bovada, the odds of play resuming before April 15 sit at -115, with the chances of it happening on or after April 15 at -125.

On Thursday morning, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said on ESPN’s Get Up that his expectation is the NBA campaign will not be canceled entirely, just postponed. Cuban stated he could see NBA games going as late as August this year.

NHL Put on Ice for the Time Being

While the NBA deals with the coronavirus threat, the NHL has joined it in suspending its regular season for the time being.

Addressing the media on Thursday, commissioner Gary Bettman said: “In light of ongoing developments resulting from the coronavirus, and after consulting with medical experts and convening a conference call of the Board of Governors, the National Hockey League is announcing today that it will pause the 2019-20 season beginning with tonight’s games.”

Bettman made sure to reiterate that the league’s hope is to resume play as soon as it’s deemed safe to complete the season and award the Stanley Cup.
