Odds on the United States Instituting a Mandatory Nationwide COVID-19 Quarantine

Odds on the United States Instituting a Mandatory Coronavirus Quarantine

The COVID-19 pandemic’s drastic impact on the world is unlike anything we’ve seen in recent memory. Across the United States, schools are closed, businesses are shuttered and people are being urged to stay indoors to prevent the disease from spreading.

With the majority of the country practicing social distancing, odds are out on whether the U.S.A. will take it to the next level and implement a mandatory quarantine. Bovada is dealing odds on that happening, with the YES option favored at -140 and the NO prop coming back at EVEN money.

U.S. Deaths Related to COVID-19 Surpass 1,000

On March 26, the number of coronavirus infections was closing in on a half-million worldwide. Italy and the United States are currently on track to surpass China, where the virus originated. In the U.S. alone, approximately 70,000 people have contracted the coronavirus, with the number of total deaths surpassing 1,000.

The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, recently blasted leaders across the globe for wasting precious time in the fight to contain the virus. The coronavirus has killed more than 22,000 people worldwide and infected over 480,000.

“The time to act was actually more than a month ago or two months ago,” he said on Wednesday. “We squandered the first window of opportunity. This is a second opportunity, which we should not squander and do everything to suppress and control the virus.”

Trump Expects Some Normalcy By Easter

Given U.S. President Donald Trump’s opinion on how things should be handled going forward, it’s hard to foresee a mandatory quarantine being announced. Trump has expressed hope churches could return to normal by Easter Sunday (April 12) while stating that “our country wasn’t built to be shut down.”

Trump’s comments haven’t come without criticism. Many Democrats say Trump is putting the economy ahead of the health and safety of Americans. The devastating effects on financial markets and employment could significantly hinder his re-election chances in the 2020 presidential election.

Biden Voices His Stance

Joe Biden, the front-runner to be named the Democratic nominee, also weighed in on the matter. “I’d like to say let’s get back to work next Friday. That’d be wonderful. But it can’t be arbitrary,” the former vice-president said.

The coming weeks will dictate whether or not the United States will enforce similar lockdown measures that are happening in other countries.
