Sunrisers Hyderabad’s winning streak came to an end during their last game against the Gujarat Titans. It was the end of a five-match run where they went unbeaten after beginning the season with two humiliating losses where the team looked both out of sorts and out of ideas.
Their remarkable bounce-back was built on the back of finding their best XI eventually, and it could well have been six wins in a row after they posted 195 on Wednesday, and Umran Malik took a five-wicket haul while defending that total.
A late surge from Rahul Tewatia, though, and a whirlwind 11-ball 31 from former Sunrisers man Rashid Khan consigned them to a defeat off the last ball of the match.
With that being the case, they won’t be too fussed in the lead up to their Sunday game against the Chennai Super Kings who continue to be second from the bottom this season.
The threshold for playoff qualification has generally hovered around the 12- and 14-point mark in the IPL, with the introduction of two new teams, that number can safely be assumed to have raised to at least 16 points this year.
With that being the case, Chennai Super Kings are mathematically still in the race to qualify. From their current position, with 4 points from 8 games, they can hit a maximum of 16 points if they go on to win all of their remaining games.

Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Chennai Super Kings Odds
|Chennai Super Kings||-125|
Sunrisers Hyderabad (+100)
Hyderabad have a lot going well for them at the moment, their bowling combination in particular, which has been used with a lot of strategic astuteness by captain Kane Williamson. But Williamson’s own form, coupled with those of Rahul Tripathi’s and Nicholas Pooran’s, has not yet hit top gear.
At the moment, Abhishek Sharma’s form at the top of the order is helping paper over the low frequency of top-quality batting starts that the Sunrisers are managing to achieve. Against Chennai Super Kings is an opportunity for them to change that, with no one in the fast-bowling attack looking like a world-class threat until Dwayne Bravo comes on towards the end of the power plays.
Sorting that out will be on the forefront for Sunrisers coming into this game, alongside the fact that they’ll need to get back to winning ways and make sure they have as little scrambling to do come the end of the league stage as possible.
Chennai Super Kings (-125)
A big chunk of Chennai Super Kings’ troubles this season has been down to the fact that their bowling line-up has looked far too pedestrian, far too often. The return of Deepak Chahar was one way to fix that at the start of the season, but his being ruled out for the entirety of the IPL threw a spanner in the works for Chennai.
On observing them from a distance though, it doesn’t appear like his presence would have changed too much by way of results for them. Their batting, so reliant on the combination of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis last year, hasn’t been able to find a way since the two were separated, and since Gaikwad has fallen completely out of form.
In the absence of that top-order solidity, the free-flowing games of batsmen like Ambati Rayudu and Ravindra Jadeja haven’t been allowed to come fully to the fore either.
In short, it’s been a season of all-around mediocrity from Chennai so far. There may yet be wins for them to be had in the second half of this tournament, but for all smart money, this doesn’t look like a team that will end up anywhere near the playoffs spots.
Hyderabad vs Chennai Pick:
Sunrisers Hyderabad To Win (+100)
The results so far and the odds that the bookies have ascribed to Chennai Super Kings in this match-up do not look too logical to us at the moment. Chennai Super Kings are underdogs given the odds of a favorite. Take a punt on Sunrisers Hyderabad to return to winning ways at these valuable odds.
Hyderabad vs Chennai Best Bet
Nicholas Pooran To Hit A Six (-188)
It hasn’t been easy going for Nicholas Pooran in the IPL so far, but this is among the friendlier bowling line-ups he will come against.
There is no pace-bowling enforcer in the Chennai squad and there might potentially be two left-arm spinners too. This could be the game where he is able to let loose.
