Bad Beats & Big Wins

Pamela Maldonado Explores Bad Beats and Big Wins From the Sports Betting World.

Maybe we just like the pain, the torture, the torment that comes with putting money on sports. Because we just keep coming back for more.

If we’re being honest, though, it’s the sweat of the final minute of the game that could either make or break your day that keeps us placing wagers week after week. When the team you've bet is ahead but a field goal could scuttle its bid to cover the spread, or when you have an UNDER and there’s still two minutes left in the game, it’s covering by three and a backup quarterback is put in – why make me sweat it out? It’s the thrill and I’m here for it.

Let’s look at some of the bad beats … and the wins from the weekend.

Bad Beats

The Toledo Rockets (NCAAB, not NCAAF) were up by three points with six seconds left in their game against Notre Dame as 8-point underdogs. The ML was as high as +325 and Toledo bettors were already making their way to the counter to collect. Never do that! Never celebrate prematurely.

The Rockets went on to lose the game 64-62 in overtime but did cover the spread.

Yes, yes, I fell victim to another unfortunate loss. I happily took the UCF Knights to cover as 6-point favorites at Tulane on Saturday. UCF was up 10-7 early in the second quarter and it was (mostly) smooth sailing as the Knights extended their lead, seesawing between 10 and 17 points. With seven minutes left in the game, the Green Wave cut their deficit down to 10 with a touchdown drive of nearly four minutes. Things were still looking pretty until the final 26 seconds. Yes, 26 SECONDS left in the game and … Life’s not fair. A meaningless touchdown.

If you took Temple on the moneyline at +290, hope was in full effect. Down 13-0, Re’Mahn Davis ran it in for a seven-yard touchdown to make the score 13-6. Instead of adding another point on the PAT, the attempt was blocked and turned into a defensive PAT conversion that allowed the Bearcats to extend their lead.

KellyInVegas took the Owls as +9 underdogs but also said she’d be taking them on the ML. The opportunity was definitely there.

This isn't betting-related directly, but just because it’s Week 12 and the NFL referees still have no idea what they are doing:

Big Wins

Let's forget about the bad beats, though, the wins are where it’s at. I’m not a fan of parlays but when you can turn $10 into $9,300 – my gosh, I may start doing some $10 fun parlays myself. It’s one thing when you parlay spreads and/or totals, it’s a whole other level when you parlay pops. Sick win, my man! Sick win.

And for many on Sunday night, a field-goal decision is exactly what was needed in order to cash their ticket.

Thanks, Jason Garrett, for conservative play-calling down a touchdown at the New England 11-yard line. Your lack of huevos helped anyone holding a +6 ticket.

I want to one day place $5 on a 12-team parlay and HIT for a $12K score. Seriously, where do I sign up?

Again with the props? Turning $3.59 into a $1,137 score. Should have put the full $5.

It’s not just about the parlays. It’s nice to take a single prop and be so dead-on with it.

The Tennessee Titans destroyed the Jacksonville Jaguars with the run game, closing out with a 42-20 win. And I mean DESTROYED. It was all because of Derrick Henry. Not only did he hit the OVER on 97.5 yards, he ran for 159 yards on 19 carries.

But one person’s victory was another’s demise. While ParlayQueen may have cashed on this prop, others were not as fortunate as they held UNDER 43. The score was 7-3 at the half and the third quarter just spiraled out of control. The Titans exploded with four touchdowns in six plays in the third quarter. Final score: 42-20. Who would’ve thunk?
