House Of The Dragon Odds: Who Will Sit On Iron Throne In Season 1?

Are you ready for HBO’s Game of Thrones spinoff; House of the Dragon? The Game of Thrones prequel premiers later this month on August 21 and even though the original Game of Thrones series ended disastrously fans are still excited for a return to Westeros.

House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the story of Game of Thrones and essentially covers the downfall of the Targaryen house. The new series follows the "Dance of Dragons", a civil way between Aegon Targaryen and Ryaenyra Targaryen, siblings from different mothers, as they look to control the Iron Throne. For fans of the books, the events of this series are effectively based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood.

House Of The Dragon Odds: Who Will Sit On The Iron Throne In Season 1?

Sportsbook Sportsbook make Viserys’ son Aegon the favorite at -150 and Viserys’s daughter Rhaenyra with the second-best odds at even money. Viserys's brother Daemon Targaryen has the third-best odds at +225.

Again, the story of House of the Dragon follows the civil war that erupts between Aegon and his sister Rhaenyra Targaryen for the Westerosie throne after the death of King Viserys. Both will eventually "sit" on the Iron Throne at some point according to the books. 

We know who sits on the throne to open the series, that’s King Viserys the first. But who occupies it at the end of the series is wildly important. It’s the show's entire premise; who controls power in Westeros?

I'll admit the wording of this prop bet is a bit vague. Any of these characters could possibly sit on the Iron Throne in Season 1, but it only makes sense to wager on who will be sitting on the throne at the end of the season.

House Of The Dragon Odds: Who Will Be Hand Of The King by End of Season 1

The Hand of the King is the second most powerful position in Westeros. Appointed as the advisor to the King (or Queen), the Hand is the highest ranking member of the small council and is responsible for taking decisions in the name of the King.

Otto Hightower makes the most sense to be the Hand of the King after the passing of King Viserys because he was Viserys’s hand when he passed. It’s why Sportsbook gave him the best odds to be Hand by the end of Season 1.

Corlys Velaryon and Ser Criston Cole sit second on the oddsboard at +150.

Corlys is married to Rhaenys Targaryen, he's the head of the wealthy House Veleryon and in control of the biggest naval fleet in the world. Politically, it makes sense to make Corlys the Hand of the King for his wealth, connection to the family and for his military power. 

Cole, a great swordsman, and eventual Lord Commander of the Kingsguard will, according to the books, become Hand of the King under Aegon the second. But what matters here is if he'll become Hand at the end of Season 1 or not?

Picks for House Of The Dragon Season 1

Who Sits On Iron Throne in Season 1: Alicent Hightower (+400)

Again, I'm assuming the prop here is to see who sits on the Throne by the end of the season and not just who sits on it at some point during the season.

I have a feeling that the 10 episodes of Season 1 will see a lot of building by introducing characters and setting the tension within the continent of Westeros. The conclusion of Season 1 could very well be the death of Viserys. We might not see an actual monarch by the end of Season 1.

That leaves the door open for Viserys’s wife, Alicent Hightower, to sit on the Iron Throne by the end of the season. Keep in mind we know she conceals the King's death to pave the way for her son Aegon to be King. So there might just be a secret gulf in power where that she could fill. 

Who Will Be Hand: Otto Hightower (-110)

Sometimes you got to go chalk. Otto is already the Hand when Viserys dies, which is likely how, in my opinion, Season 1 will end. He’s also the Queen's father so assisting her in placing what is his grandson Aegon on the throne as the Hand of the King makes a lot of sense.

Again, it's a chalk pick, but a $100 winning bet on Otto Hightower to be Hand of the King by the end of Season 1 would still return $90.91 in profits.
