Ronda Rousey opened as a -650 favorite to defeat Alexa Bliss for the second consecutive WWE pay-per-view and retain her WWE Raw women’s championship. Rousey defeated Bliss in a heavily one-sided bout as the co-main event at SummerSlam last month. Alexa has invoked her mandatory rematch clause and will need a much better strategy at Hell in a Cell than she had at SummerSlam. As of Sunday afternoon Ronda's odds have moved to -1050.
In the lead-up to the rematch, we’ve seen a steady dose of Rousey and Natalia in a feud with Alexa, Mickie James and Alicia Fox. Expect most or all of those women to be involved in the finish of this match in one way or the other. With Rousey defeating Bliss so handily at SummerSlam, WWE creative has painted this feud into a corner – building Rousey to be unstoppable, even by the former champion, much like they did with Brock Lesnar on the men’s side.
AJ Styles vs Samoa Joe
Now, this is how you build a feud. The writers on the Smackdown brand have been given gold to work with thanks to the performances of Samoa Joe and AJ Styles. This has the potential to be the blow-off for this feud, but it’s so hot that I can see it continuing to Survivor Series.
Styles won the SummerSlam match, but the match became secondary to Joe’s (storyline) interference with Styles’ wife and children. This is the first such angle WWE has portrayed since its switch to PG and they are pushing the creative line to the edge of what they’ve previously deemed “acceptable family viewing.” It’s a throwback to the attitude era and it would be great to see this feud continue.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see a screwy finish to this match, setting up a potential title win for Samoa Joe at Survivor Series in November.
Roman Reigns vs Braun StroWman
Reigns will defend his newly won WWE universal championship. With Brock Lesnar departing, WWE put the strap back on Reigns in the never-ending quest to get him “over” with the fans. (Sidebar: Vince, it ain’t gonna happen. Please stop.) Reigns is a -395 favorite to beat “The Monster Among Men” Braun Strowman and retain his title.
In a match that is sure to have plenty of painful bumps from chairs and steel steps and potentially death-daring fall(s) from the top of the cage through a table, fans will still leave rolling their eyes because they don’t care about Reigns’ character. Then the Shield will come out and everyone will cheer.
