Season 4 of the Overwatch League is set to wrap up at the end of September, bringing us the most important event of the year: the playoffs.
The event will decide the overall winner of this year’s Overwatch League, with teams not only earning the honor of being crowned the best in the world, but also the lion’s share of a $3.5-million prize pool. With so much on the line, we’ll definitely see some intense moments and some of the best games of the year.
Make sure to check out our guide on all things Overwatch League and let’s take a look at the event in more detail.
Who’s Playing At The Overwatch League Playoffs?
The Overwatch League playoffs feature eight of the best teams of the year, with each team qualifying based on regular-season results or their performance at the last-chance play-in.
We’ll see favorites Dallas Fuel, as well as the Los Angeles Gladiators, Atlanta Reign, San Francisco Shock and Washington Justice representing the West division, while the Shanghai Dragons, Chengdu Hunters and Philadelphia Fusion represent the East.
Each team is seeded directly into a double-elimination bracket, with matchups being decided based on results so far. This means the best performing teams face the worst-performing teams in the first round, such as the regular-season winner Shanghai Dragons starting off against the San Francisco Shock, who had to go through the play-in to qualify.
In the playoffs, each team essentially has two lives, meaning that a loss knocks them down to the losers bracket and once a team loses twice, they are eliminated.

Has Dallas Run Out Of Fuel?
There’s no denying the Dallas Fuel were one of the hottest Overwatch teams of the year. They claimed second in the regular season and the June Joust, as well as taking home the May Melee.
However, they definitely slowed down in the second half of the year. They struggled in the Summer Showdown, finishing in third, and completely crumbled in the Countdown Cup, as they were destroyed 3-0 by the San Francisco Shock.
Still, they enter the playoffs as favorites and will no doubt be doing all they can to secure the OWL trophy. However, given their recent results, there is a possibility we could see an upset.
Dragons Aim To Close Out Strong Year
The Shanghai Dragons were definitely the other standout team of the year, performing very well across the board. They topped the regular season, as well as winning the June Joust and Summer Showdown, alongside a second place at the May Melee.
All in all, it’s a little strange to not see Shanghai as the favorite. After all, they’ve won almost everything they’ve played this year and it doesn’t look like anyone can stop them.
The one thing that they do have going against them, however, is that they may be a bit out of shape. The Dragons’ last match was on August 8, meaning they’ll have a month and a half of break until their first playoffs match.
This means that they could be rusty going into it, but at the same time, it also means they’ve had a long time to prepare. It will be interesting to see how their long break affects them.
Gladiators Look To Continue Countdown Cup Momentum
The Los Angeles Gladiators are another top side in the Overwatch League this year. They finished fourth in the regular season and have seen decent results throughout various events, which culminated with a first-place finish at the Countdown Cup.
They’ll no doubt be looking to build on their year at the playoffs and they should be able to use their Countdown Cup momentum to do just that. It was a much-needed win for the team and it will no doubt give them more confidence when facing the best of the best.
The playoffs will definitely be a tough challenge, but the LA Gladiators are worth keeping your eyes on.
