NRG Favored to Win Rocket League NA Major

Rocket League NRG Decal
Rocket League

One of the biggest North American Rocket League events of 2021 is set to kick off this weekend, as the Winter Major is coming up fast. The event is a culmination of the last few months of competition, with each team working hard to earn a spot at the major through various regional events.

We’re no doubt set for some exciting matches, as well as the highest-stakes event of 2021 so far. Not only does the event feature a healthy $100,000 cash prize, but teams also earn crucial qualification points for the world championship.

If you’re new to Rocket League or just want to learn more about the game before placing a wager, make sure to check out our Rocket League guide, and let’s take an in-depth look at the NA Major.

Who’s Playing at the Rocket League NA Major?

The North American Major will feature 12 of the best Rocket League teams in the region, featuring all of the region’s favorites as well as some up-and-comers. NRG, Envy and Spacestation Gaming highlight the event, although we’ll also see the likes of Rogue and G2, as well as the Susquehanna Soniqs and Kansas City Pioneers.

When it comes to the event itself, we see the usual double-elimination playoff bracket. This means that a team is eliminated after two losses, while losing once relegates it to the lower bracket. The key thing to note about the format is that the team coming from the lower bracket has to win twice in the grand final, meaning staying undefeated for the first few matches provides a huge benefit.

NRG in Hot Form as They Look for Major Revenge

NRG enters the major in some very strong form and looks primed to get revenge after a shock defeat to Spacestation Gaming at the last major.

The team has been quite dominant since the last major in October, winning four of the eight events they’ve played and claiming a top-four finish in all but one. This includes taking down their biggest rivals, Envy and G2, as well as securing first in the overall Grid rankings.

With strong form backing an already established squad, it’s no surprise that NRG is the favorite here and they’ll definitely be looking for the trophy after their unexpected defeat in the last major.

Could We See Another Spacestation Miracle?

Spacestation’s unexpected triumph over NRG in the Fall Major was the team’s first premier trophy and cemented them as a side to at least take note of. Despite being in solid form coming into the event, it was overall considered a large upset, but it did prove that the underdogs could achieve something.

Going into this major, however, Spacestation Gaming has been struggling to find its footing, crumbling out of events in key matches. Most notably, they’ve now lost to NRG three times, and have even dropped series to teams like the Pittsburgh Knights and Kansas City Pioneers.

Regardless, there’s definitely potential for the team at the very least and the odds don’t even put them too far out there. It’s difficult to judge just how well they’ll do, but they’re worth keeping an eye on.

Can NA Champion G2 Bounce Back?

Things have been rough for G2 since their championship-winning run back in March 2020. Despite winning the region’s grandest event, they’ve floundered around mid-level rankings and haven’t done too much of anything.

A couple of wins at the weekly Grid events are shrouded mostly in top-eight finishes, with the occasional third to fourth place. Really, things aren’t looking great but as always with G2, there is huge potential.

If one thing’s for sure about the team, it is that they love showing up at big events, and the first major of 2021 is just that. The current NA champions need a good result here to keep themselves in the running as a top team, and they may just be the dark horse to back.
