F1 Podium: Three Bets for the 2018 Hungarian Grand Prix

Ferrari's German driver Sebastian Vettel (front) competes during the Hungarian F1 Grand Prix race at Hungaroring in Mogyorod, Hungary on July 30, 2017

Lewis Hamilton made history in Germany last week coming from the seventh row to win the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim. Not only did he overtake the entire field to win the maximum points, but rival Sebastian Vettel lost control in the final third of the race, hitting a wall and earning a DNF. Vettel's DNF scuttled a potential perfect weekend for my picks, but I did manage to go 2/3 with Hamilton reaching the podium and one of the Red Bull cars finishing out of the points.

Hungary is the last stop before the well-deserved month-long summer intermission for F1 teams. Despite the crash last week, Sebastian Vettel is the favorite to win in Hungary. He opened at +175 odds to take his third race at the Hungaroring in three years. Lewis Hamilton, as usual, is very close to Vettel on the odds table at +250. These odds are a little interesting considering Hamilton is the all-time wins leader at this track with five. He last took the checkered flag in 2016

Below you will find my betting picks for the Hungarian Grand Prix

P1: safety car in the race?  yes  (-150)

Given the layout of the Hungaroring, this bet could be promising for F1 bettors. With not many areas to pass, the Hungarian Grand Prix can sometimes look more like a procession than an F1 race. With a ferocious battle in the points here at the halfway mark of the season, expect drivers to get a little extra assertive with their passing. If it's tight late in the race, there's plenty of potential for high risk/high reward driving. That could cause a safety car.

  • Yes: -150
  • No: +110

P2: Sebastian Vettel fastest qualifier (+200)

Sebastian Vettel's first words to his team after crashing out in Germany were "sorry, guys." He felt horrible for bowing out from the lead position after the intense hard work throughout the weekend. One thing we've seen from the top drivers this season is the ability to bounce back from disappointment.

Vettel is comfortable on this track, having won two of the last three. He held the pole position in last year's race and is omnipresent on the front row during his career. At +200, this could be a nice pre-race bet for Saturday.

The Red Bull team has been successful and confident on this track. You'll see that the odds reflect that for qualifying and the race itself.

  • Sebastian Vettel: +200
  • Lewis Hamilton: +260
  • Max Verstappen: +275
  • Daniel Ricciardo: +275

P3: Winning Car: Mercedes (+225)

This bet is all about the odds. It's really hard to choose between Mercedes and Ferrari. Both teams are right at the top in every race as the F1 season unfolds. Red Bull have been right there with them most of the way. I'm interested to see if this develops into a three-team battle in the constructors' standings as time progresses.

At +225 for a Mercedes car to win, I feel like this is some serious value when you consider how good both Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas have been in 2018. Red Bull is getting a lot of credit going into this race, but in my estimation, you can never count out the Mercedes cars and drivers.

  • Red Bull: +125
  • Ferrari: +162
  • Mercedes: +225
