Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is the setting for the second stop of the PGA Tour season when the CIMB Classic takes place at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club. A lot of the Tour’s big names didn’t make the trip, but that doesn’t mean sports bettors should overlook the tournament.
At Sportsbook, Paul Casey is a +900 favorite to win it all. Hideki Matsuyama (+1000), Patrick Reed (+1000), Adam Scott (+1100), Charles Howell III (+1100), Justin Thomas (+1400), Ryan Moore (+1400), Kevin Na (+1800), Sergio Garcia (+2000) and Gary Woodland (+2200) round out the top 10 at the shop.
In 2013, the field expanded to 78 golfers, with 60 coming from the FedExCup standings, 10 from the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit and eight courtesy of sponsors exemptions. The CIMB Classic is especially unique since it’s the only PGA Tour event staged in Asia.
Length and accuracy at the tee aren’t necessarily important in this event. Finding the greens and putting well are essential for a player to triumph here. Of the last 12 champions, only Louis Oosthuizen in 2012 ranked outside the top 12 in putting.
The fairways are much more forgiving than the majority of North American courses, but there’s a considerable margin for error due to water being in play on 13 holes. Weather is always an issue at the CIMB Classic, as heavy precipitation and high winds tend to more often than not have an impact on play.
Last year’s winner, Thomas, is an appealing option at +1400. The American is clearly comfortable in Malaysia, and he’s got as much talent as anyone else in the field. Moore, who won in 2013 and 2014, will also be heavily backed by the betting public.
