Hero World Challenge Odds: Tiger's Back

There’s going to be no shortage of chatter about this weekend’s Hero World Challenge, as the legendary Tiger Woods makes his long-awaited return to competitive golf.

At Bovada, Dustin Johnson is a +500 favorite to go all the way. Jordan Spieth (+600), Hideki Matsuyama (+800), Brooks Koepka (+900), Henrik Stenson (+1000), Patrick Reed (+1200), Rickie Fowler (+1400), Justin Rose (+1800), Bubba Watson (+2000) and Russell Knox (+2500) round out the top 10.

The field is unique as it features only 18 men. Woods hosts the tournament every year, with play taking place at Albany, New Providence in the Bahamas.

Woods’ odds come in a bit further down the list at +3000. The former world No. 1 hasn’t played on the PGA Tour since August of 2015 due to various injuries despite initially stating he would participate in the Safeway Open a month ago. Due to his inactivity, Woods is now ranked 879 in the world.

Truthfully, no one really knows what to expect from the 40-year-old except for Woods himself. Facts are facts: Woods is a 14-time major champion who’s become one of the biggest athletes in the world, but his fall from grace since his “indiscretions” surrounding ex-wife Elin Nordegren came to light has been tough to watch.

Look, I love Tiger Woods, but betting on him to win outright while overcoming the in-form Johnson, Spieth and Stenson is a risk I’m not willing to take. Oddsmakers love Woods because of the die-hard following he possesses, and a lot of those people will blindly bet him in the hopes he’ll finally return to glory again.

Eldrick hasn’t won a major since claiming the U.S. Open in 2008, and he hasn’t won a tournament since August 2013 (the Bridgestone Invitational).

No matter what happens in Albany, the focus will be once again squarely on Woods. Whether or not he can stave off Father Time and prove he's still a legitimate contender remains to be seen.
