The PGA Tour’s only Mexican stop of the year takes place this weekend when the OHL Classic at Mayakoba gets underway in Playa del Carmen. The field isn’t particularly strong, but there’s no shortage of value to be found for sports bettors.
At Sportsbook, Russell Knox is the +1400 favorite to go all the way. Jon Rahm (+1600), Emiliano Grillo (+1800), Jim Furyk (+2000), Keegan Bradley (+2200), Harris English (+2500), Billy Horschel (+2800), Si-Woo Kim (+2800), Scott Piercy (+3000) and Chris Kirk (+3300) round out the top 10 at the shop.
Graeme McDowell, who edged out Knox in a playoff at the 2015 event, will be looking to retain his title in Mexico. Only four of the world’s top 35 players will be in action, which leads one to think an inexperienced player could find success this time around. The OHL Classic hasn’t been a young man’s tournament, however, as only two men under the age of 30 have triumphed in nine years.
El Camaleon Golf Club, or “The Chameleon” in English, is true to its name. Three distinct landscapes can be found at the course, as a tropical jungle, dense mangroves and sand-lined oceanfront along the Riviera Maya provide no shortage of beautiful scenery. El Camaleon served as one of two hosts for the world amateur team championships in September.
While McDowell owns the bragging rights, it would be a tall order to ask the Northern Irishman to repeat in 2016. McDowell is one of the most likable golfers on the Tour, but it’s quite clear his best days are behind him. In 21 events this year, McDowell has made the cut only 11 times.
