Northern Trust Odds & Betting Preview

The FedEx Cup playoffs don’t get the same kind of exposure as the postseasons of the four major professional sports leagues, but golf bettors know the stretch run of the PGA Tour is one of the most exciting parts of the year. The 2017 playoffs officially get underway this weekend when the inaugural Northern Trust is showcased at Glen Oaks Club in Old Westbury, New York. From 2007 to 2016, this tournament was known as The Barclays before the name officially changed to Northern Trust.

As the first of four tournaments in the tour’s playoff system, the top 125 players in the FedEx Cup standings will be in the field. Hideki Matsuyama is the +1000 favorite, with Jordan Spieth (+1200), Dustin Johnson (+1200), Rickie Fowler (+1400), Rory McIlroy (+1400), Jason Day (+1800), Brooks Koepka (+2000), Justin Thomas (+2000), Henrik Stenson (+2200) and Jon Rahm (+2500) rounding out the top 10.

Patrick Reed picked up a playoffs victory and a Ryder Cup berth here last year when he overcame an early two-shot deficit to light up the back nine and end a 55-start winless drought in the process. The American has a +3300 shot to do it again.

Matsuyama, Thomas and Spieth are separated by only 198 points atop the FedEx Cup points race, while Johnson is not far behind in fourth place. The four men are the only players to record multiple victories during the regular season. This will be Thomas’ first time teeing it up since winning his first major at the PGA Championship.

It’s worthwhile to note how important the points system is in the playoffs. Only the top 100 in the standings will move on to the Dell Technologies Championship next week, which means 25 men will be starting their offseason vacations early.

The course is a 7,350-yard par 70 that has been around since 1924. Glen Oaks underwent a major renovation in 2011 that paved the way for the first tour event here in 2011.
