SBS Tournament of Champions Odds

After taking a month-long break for the holidays, the PGA Tour is back this weekend as the SBS Tournament of Champions gets underway in Kapalua, Hawaii.

Some of the best golfers in the world will be in attendance, but it’s Hideki Matsuyama and Jordan Spieth who are +500 co-favorites. Dustin Johnson (+550), Jason Day (+800), Patrick Reed (+1200), Justin Thomas (+1600), Brandt Snedeker (+1600), Bubba Watson (+1800), Jimmy Walker (+2500) and Daniel Berger (+2800) round out the top 10.

The first event of 2017 is unique in that it’s restricted to players who won a tournament on the Tour during the previous year. Spieth will be looking to reclaim the crown after topping the field at the event in 2016 in a dominant 30-under effort – eight strokes better than second-place finisher Patrick Reed.

The setting for the tournament is the Plantation Course, which is only a par 73. It’s long but relatively easy by PGA Tour standards with big elevation changes. A lot of the toughness depends on the wind, as a blustery day can make the course frustrating. If there isn’t much wind, however, it should be a breeze for the deep field.

Putting some money on Matsuyama is a wise idea. The native of Japan has won an amazing four of his last five starts and finished third at the SBS Tournament of Champions two years ago.

Sharp bettors would be wise to fade Day. The world No. 1 is undoubtedly one of the most talented players in the game, but he hasn’t played since withdrawing from the Tour Championship with a back injury in September. Expect Day to get back to form soon, but it won’t happen overnight, and the +800 price doesn’t present much value regardless.
