Shell Houston Open Odds & Betting Preview

This article is about the 2017 tournament. For a betting breakdown of the 2018 Houston Open, click here.

The last stop on the PGA Tour before the biggest tournament of the year takes place this weekend when the golfing world shifts its sights to the Lone Star State for the Shell Houston Open. The field for this year’s tournament is especially strong, as many players will be looking for a final tune-up before the Masters Tournament.

Jordan Spieth is the +650 favorite to garner the hardware, while Jon Rahm (+1000), Henrik Stenson (+1100), Rickie Fowler (+1400), Justin Rose (+2000), Phil Mickelson (+2000), Adam Scott (+2500), Russell Henley (+2800), Daniel Berger (+3300) and J.B. Holmes (+3300) round out the top 10.

Normally the Houston Open is overlooked in terms of drawing star power, but five of the top 10 golfers in the world rankings will tee it up in H-Town. The rest of the players in attendance will be relieved to see Dustin Johnson isn’t in the fold, as the world No. 1 has won three straight tournaments after triumphing at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play last weekend.

Jim Herman isn’t exactly a household name, but he did earn his first career PGA Tour victory at this event a year ago. Herman has played some solid golf since then, and he’s a ridiculous +10000 to do it again. It’s a long shot, but there are certainly worse options out there.

This is a venue that’s traditionally rewarded big hitters, so backing a golfer who’s perennially solid off the tee is a good idea. Big bombers like Scott, Mickelson, Paul Casey and Anthony Kim have won four of the last seven championships.

The fairways are wide with much less rough compared to other courses on the Tour, and water is in play on half the holes. The greens are larger than average but they’ll be playing fast in an attempt to simulate the conditions at Augusta National.
