WGC-HSBC Champions Odds & Betting Preview

The fall doldrums are common for golf bettors in the early going of the PGA Tour season, but this week’s tournament will pique the interest of those following the sport thanks to the WGC-HSBC Champions taking place. A loaded field is set to descend on Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai, China in the fourth and final WGC event on the calendar in 2017.

Dustin Johnson is the +750 favorite at Bovada, with Hideki Matsuyama (+1000), Jason Day (+1800), Jon Rahm (+1800), Marc Leishman (+1800), Paul Casey (+1800), Brooks Koepka (+2200), Justin Rose (+2200), Tyrell Hatton (+2500) and Ross Fisher (+2500) rounding out the top 10.

The world No. 1 Johnson and defending champion Matsuyama hold all four World Golf Championships between them this year, so oddsmakers are clearly expecting the betting public to favor them heavily. The lineup boasts 18 of the top 25 in the world rankings in the shortened 78-man field.

Matsuyama became the first Asian winner since the WGC was created 18 years ago, as the native of Japan took a three-shot lead into the final day and finished with a 6-under-par 66. Matsuyama’s seven-stroke gap between himself and second place is the largest in WGC history.

There haven’t been many upsets at this tournament over the last few years, evidenced by only two of the previous 11 champions coming from outside of 30th in the world rankings. Those exceptions were Y.E. Yang in 2006 and Russell Knox in 2015.

The course is one of the most exclusive tracks in China, and this year’s edition will mark the 12th time in the last 13 years the Champions has been held here. The 7,266-yard par-72 Sheshan International Golf Club was once called “the crowning jewel of all of Asian golf” by Tiger Woods after it opened.
