Waste Management Phoenix Open Odds & Betting Preview

One of the most popular events on the PGA Tour calendar takes place this weekend as the best golfers in the world set their sights on Scottsdale, Arizona for the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

At Bovada, Jordan Spieth is the +800 favorite, with Hideki Matsuyama (+1000), Jon Rahm (+1000), Rickie Fowler (+1100), Justin Thomas (+1400), Daniel Berger (+2800), Alex Noren (+3300), Marc Leishman (+3300), Tony Finau (+3300) and Webb Simpson (+3300) rounding out the top 10.

The 2017 edition of the tournament had an estimated crowd of 655,434 people.

The tournament is well known for its rowdy atmosphere and relaxed setting, which goes against the grain of the standards in professional golf. As a result, it’s been given the nickname “The Greatest Show on Grass.” In all, 10 of the top 25 men in the world rankings will be in attendance, as well as 18 of the top 25 in the FedExCup standings.

Matsuyama is the two-time defending champion after defeating Simpson in a four-hole overtime playoff a year ago. A player hasn’t gone back to back to back at the same tournament since Steve Stricker won three straight John Deere Classics from 2009 to 2011. In four visits to Phoenix, the native of Japan hasn’t finished worse than fourth place. Stricker will be teeing it up for the first time since last year’s FedExCup playoff opener.

The course is a tough 7,261-yard par 71 that will welcome more than half a million spectators. The par-3 16th hole is its most famous hole, as a football stadium-like grandstand wraps around the tee box. Beer showers have become the norm on No. 16, whether the golfer performs well or poorly.

Just how popular is the Waste Management Phoenix Open? According to PGATour.com, the 2017 edition of the tournament had an estimated crowd of 655,434 people, surpassing the Arizona Cardinals’ 2017 home attendance (513,741) and that of every other NFL team except the Dallas Cowboys.
