PGA Tour Expert Picks: Masters Tournament

Look, predicting a pre-tournament winner in golf isn’t easy. While it’s true sports bettors can find fantastic value, it’s incredibly frustrating when one of your picks doesn’t even make the cut. That’s why I’m here to help.

Every week I’ll highlight three golfers who have a good chance to win the hardware for the upcoming weekend. This week it’s the holy grail of professional golf tournaments: the Masters.

For a full breakdown of the first major of the year, check out my Masters betting preview. Aside from my top three picks for the tournament, I’ve also selected three players who could provide some solid sleeper value for golf bettors.

For a list of every prop special available for the big event at Augusta National Golf Club, check out our Ultimate Masters Betting Props Page.

My favorite pick: Justin Rose +1400

With five top-10s in 13 career starts at Augusta National, Rose is poised for yet another strong Masters showing. The world No. 1, who posted a T-12 here last year, is riding a streak of two straight top-10s after finishing T-8 at The Players and T-9 at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.

Rose leads the PGA Tour in putts per GIR, one-putt percentage and three-putt avoidance. He’s as steady as it gets on the tour, and he’s due for another major victory to go along with his 2013 U.S. Open triumph. I think he’ll get one in 2019, and the Masters looks like the most likely option to me.

My second favorite pick: Hideki Matsuyama +2800

Matsuyama remains one of the most talented golfers on the circuit without a major win under his belt, but he’s proven in the past he has what it takes to conquer Augusta National. The native of Japan has posted four straight top-20s at the Masters and hasn’t missed the cut here as a pro.

The 27-year-old is in excellent form, arriving with six top-25s, including three top-10s, in his past seven starts. He arrived at the Masters early and played an extra practice round last Friday, so expect him to be ready to compete for the green jacket on Sunday.

My third favorite pick: Louis Oosthuizen +4000

Oosthuizen is no stranger to Augusta, as the South African has five top-25s in his last seven appearances here. Oosthuizen has two of the most memorable hole-outs in recent tournament history and always seems to step up his game when it’s Masters week.

When it comes to recent play, Oosthuizen is swinging a hot club right now thanks to a T-2 at the Valspar and a T-5 at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. Even if he doesn’t win outright, the 36-year-old is a fantastic DFS play.

My favorite sleeper pick: Marc Leishman +4500

Leishman’s +4500 price is not classic sleeper value, but I consider him a dark-horse pick due to the fact that no one is talking about him right now despite his excellent play this season. The Aussie has five top-10s in 2018-19 and is no stranger to high finishes at the Masters, evidenced by a solo ninth here last year and a T-4 in 2013.

My second favorite sleeper pick: Matthew Fitzpatrick +12500

Fitzpatrick is yet another talented golfer in a long line of British pros to find success in North America, as the 24-year-old came within two shots of winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational last month. Having an excellent short game is crucial at Augusta National, and Fitzpatrick has that in spades. His strong putter should keep him in the mix this week.

My third favorite sleeper pick: Jimmy Walker +25000

Walker has never missed a cut at Augusta National, with showings of T-8, T-38, T-29, T-18 and T-20 in his five trips here. For that reason alone he’s an extremely solid DFS play and is well worth the long-shot wager to win the tournament outright at his current price of +25000. He already has a major win under his belt after triumphing at the 2016 PGA Championship.
