Expert PGA Betting Picks: Wells Fargo Championship

Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland celebrates making eagle on the eighth hole during the third round of the 2018 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on April 7, 2018 in Augusta, Georgia.

Look, predicting a pre-tournament winner in golf isn’t easy. While it’s true sports bettors can find fantastic value, it’s incredibly frustrating when one of your picks doesn’t even make the cut. That’s why I’m here to help.

Every week I’ll highlight three golfers who have a good chance to win the hardware for the upcoming weekend. This week it’s the Wells Fargo Championship.

My favorite pick: Rory McIlroy +750

I’m not exactly going out on a limb by backing the favored McIlroy, but the Northern Irishman’s stats at this tournament are too good to ignore. Quail Hollow Club, one of the toughest golf courses in the world, has been the setting for some epic performances by McIlroy.

The 28-year-old owns the course (61) and tournament records to go along with two wins and six top-10s at the event. McIlroy hasn’t played since a T-5 finish at the Masters a month ago but is in great form despite his disappointing final round at Augusta National, evidenced by a triumph at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in mid-March. There are never any pure “locks” in golf, but Rory tearing up Quail Hollow is as close as it gets.

Solid value: Louis Oosthuizen +4000

This year’s tournament is unique since it was last played at a different course (Eagle Point Golf Club) due to Quail Hollow hosting the 2017 PGA Championship, so paying attention to players who had good showings at the major is important. Enter Oosthuizen.

The South African placed T-2 at the PGA Championship and was in contention for the majority of the tournament, highlighted by a second-round 67. Oosthuizen is as consistent as they come right now, notching five top-25s in his last seven starts, including a T-12 at the Masters. Believe in Louis!

My favorite sleeper pick: Byeong Hun An +8000

An is not a household name on the PGA Tour by any means, but savvy golf bettors know it’s only a matter of time before he collects a win at a PGA Tour event. An’s confidence is at an all-time high right now, and the 26-year-old has come close to winning this season (T-5 at the Honda Classic, T-7 at the RBC Heritage and T-11 at the CJ Cup).

With the U.S. Open approaching, the fields are going to get tougher from here on out, but don’t let that scare you from picking lesser-known players. An has connected for four top-25s in his past seven starts and placed T-28 at the 2017 PGA Championship.
