Four Underdog Picks For The Deutsche Bank Championship

The Deutsche Bank Championship goes this weekend, which is always a cool tourney on the schedule. It’s in Boston, it runs from Friday to Monday and it’s a classy field that always gives you a little side of golf to go with your Labor Day weekend college football action.

TPC Boston is a tough-but-fair track where you can go low if you keep it in play but you can struggle in a hurry if you don't. It's why the winner usually posts a low score while the tourney scoring average usually ranks among the toughest of the par 71s played on Tour each year.

I'm looking at birdie average and scrambling as two really important stats categories this week. The winner is usually -15 or better and the last four winners ranked within the top six in scrambling for the week.

From that, here are few long shots I think are worth a wager this week with odds from Bovada :

Phil Mickelson (33-1) – He ranks eighth on the PGA in birdie average and fourth in scrambling - not to mention he’s the PGA scoring average leader. He also won here in 2007.

Brandt Snedeker (50-1) – Ranks 22nd in birdie average and 20th in scrambling. He has seven top 10’s this year including two top 5’s in his last four events.

J.B. Holmes (125-1) – Holmey is admittedly not your boy when it comes to scrambling but he can go low. He ranks seventh in birdie average and eighth in par breakers. He finished 10th in Ryder Cup points standings and will be eager to snatch a captain’s pick to earn a place on the squad.

Alex Cejka (250-1) – Ranks 14th in birdie average and third in scrambling this season. The German likely won’t mind as much if things get a little windy in Boston. He has long odds but a play on him could give you some nice hedge options if he’s near the leaders going into the weekend. The winner has come from behind in each of the past six years.
