2018 Houston Open Odds & Betting Preview

Rickie Fowler PGA Tour

Only one tournament stands between now and the Masters, as the Houston Open is set to get some of the top golfers on the PGA Tour ready for the toughest test in professional golf at Augusta National.

Sixteen players will be teeing it up at both the Houston Open and the Masters.

At Bovada, Justin Rose and Rickie Fowler are +1000 co-favorites, with Jordan Spieth (+1100), Henrik Stenson (+1200), Phil Mickelson (+1400), Daniel Berger (+2200), Luke List (+2500), Russell Henley (+2500), Tony Finau (+3000) and Rafa Cabrera-Bello (+3300) rounding out the top 10.

The Houston Open has traditionally been a tune-up for the first major of the year, and the course (Golf Club of Houston) has been widely praised for its ability to imitate Augusta. Fowler, Stenson and Matt Kuchar headline a lineup featuring six of the top 20 players in the world rankings. Sixteen players will be teeing it up both this weekend and at the Masters, and a final berth for the major could be on the line for the eventual champion.

Henley notched 10 birdies to overcome a four-shot deficit on the final day here a year ago. A bogey on the 18th hole kept Henley from breaking Mickelson’s tournament record at Golf Club of Houston.

Is another playoff in store in Houston?

The Houston Open is notorious for its close finishes, as the tournament has gone to a playoff 23 times in 72 editions. Only the U.S. Open has hosted more playoffs (33). The field features three players who reached the Round of 16 at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Austin – Kuchar, Charles Howell III and Ian Poulter.

The course, a 7,441-yard par 72, has been the lead-in venue for the Masters for the last 12 years. Carved out of the countryside in Houston’s northeast suburbs, the track is generally praised by many on the tour year in and year out.
