PGA Tour Japan Skins Event Odds: McIlroy is the Early Favorite

US golfer Tiger Woods (R) and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama walk from the 11th tee during his first round on day one of The 147th Open golf Championship at Carnoustie, Scotland on July 19, 2018.

Major season has come and gone in the 2018-19 PGA Tour campaign, but golf bettors looking for action will still have plenty of wagering opportunities going forward.

While the 2019 Open Championship in Portrush, Northern Ireland was taking place, it was announced that a return of the skins game format will take place at Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club in Japan on October 21, 2019. Competing in the event will be Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Hideki Matsuyama.

When it comes to odds, Bovada has tabbed McIlroy as the +150 front-runner to win the most money, with Woods (+175), Day (+400) and Matsuyama (+600) behind McIlroy on the board.

Tiger Woods has Never Won a Skins Event

The one-day competition will get underway a few days prior to the start of the Zozo Championship, a new tour event being played outside of Tokyo. The structure and prize money have yet to be determined, but the PGA Tour is sanctioning it. Woods has played in seven skins competitions but has never won.

Skins events used to be a staple on the PGA Tour but haven’t been a regular feature in the fall rotation since 2005. Last year Woods and Phil Mickelson played a high-stakes charity match on Thanksgiving weekend that was streamed pay-per-view by Bleacher Report, and while the match experienced major technical issues, it was viewed as the reboot of skins games.

The Japanese version of the skins challenge is reportedly part of a content deal Woods has with GolfTV, and the match’s TV rights in the United States haven’t been announced yet.
