2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic Odds & Picks: Watch Out For An

The long summer of the PGA Tour rolls on into the Motor City for the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club.

In what will only be the fifth playing of the tournament in its history, a strong field prepares to step foot onto the Donald Ross design.

They are led by betting favorite and defending champion Tony Finau at +1200. It was at this tournament last year that Finau began his sizzling summer that included a victory in Michigan and another a week later in Minnesota.

Finau arrives as one of three two-time winners on the PGA Tour this season in this field. Max Homa is among the favorites despite missing back-to-back cuts and Keegan Bradley smells blood in the water following his near record-setting victory at the Travelers Championship.

Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa and Hideki Matsuyama round out those listed below +2000 and with intent on entering the winner’s circle for the first time this season.

2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic Betting Picks

Below is three of our top Rocket Mortgage Classic picks followed by a couple of props for you to sink your teeth into.

Sungjae Im To Win +2000

The 25-year-old looked to have turned a corner at the Travelers Championship as Im found himself in contention with 36 holes to go. He ultimately fell off the pace, but his effort in Connecticut marked his first top 30 since winning on the Korean PGA Tour the week before the PGA Championship.

It has been a struggle for Im ever since then as he has missed more cuts than he has made, but he finally gained strokes throughout the bag at TPC River Highlands. Before his dry spell, Im had collected eight straight top-25 finishes with consistent gains in every aspect of his game.

The South Korean is a perfect 3-for-3 at Detroit GC with a top-10 finish in his last appearance in 2021. He has also dominated at another Donald Ross design, Sedgefield Country Club, where he has four top-25 finishes in four starts.

Byeong Hun An To Win (+6000)

One of the best stories of the 2022-23 PGA Tour season has been the quiet resurgence of An. A former U.S. Amateur champion, An has returned to the PGA Tour with vengeance and comes into the Rocket Mortgage Classic with six top-20 finishes in 24 starts.

He is gaining in each strokes gained category from tee-to-green for the first time since 2020 and looks intent on breaking the door down to the winner’s circle. The South Korean comes off a missed cut at the Travelers Championship, but the Detroit GC should be a much better fit for his game. Bombers have fared well on this par 72 with past winners like Cam Davis and Bryson DeChambeau.

Before the Travelers, An had collected three straight top-25 finishes with one of those coming at a designated event at the Memorial Tournament. He finished T-13 at this tournament in 2019 and has also fared well at the Wyndham Championship where he finished solo third that same season.

Beau Hossler To Win (+7000)

Hossler is a difficult entity to figure out, but when he plays well, he tends to find his way into contention. With this field not boasting the same strength of a designated event, Hossler should be able to emerge from a muddy middle pack.

He continues to putt the ball beautifully, and this led to a T-24 effort at the Memorial Tournament. Before that, he had rattled off seven straight made cuts including a close run at the Zurich Classic alongside Wyndham Clark and a top-10 finish at the Mexico Open – another venue that boasts wide fairways and allows players to consistently take driver off the tee.

Hossler has played in every edition of this tournament and looks to be getting more comfortable by the year.

Odds as of June 27

Alex Smalley Top-20 Finish (+260)

Smalley enjoyed a great finish to his Travelers Championship that saw him crack the top 10 by week’s end. This was on the heels of a top-25 effort at the Canadian Open and followed strong starts at both the PGA Championship and the Wells Fargo Championship. Smalley grew up playing on a Donald Ross design, the host course to the Wyndham Championship, and should translate to similar success at Detroit GC.

He is consistently gaining strokes off the tee and approach and has the capabilities of setting himself with ample opportunities. If he converts enough of those, Smalley will be in the mix come Sunday, but if he doesn’t, he should still find the top 20.

Thomas Detry Top-20 Finish (+360)

The Belgian comes off a missed cut at the Travelers Championship but was playing nicely beforehand. Detry had five top-25 finishes in his previous 10 starts some of which included fields at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Charles Schwab Challenge.

He contended on a one-week trip on the DP World Tour with a T-7 finish at the Soudal Open and looks keen to continuing such form in Detroit.

The 30-year-old will be making his tournament debut, but that shouldn’t be an issue for a player of his caliber. Detry ranks 24th in total strokes gained over the last six months and is gaining strokes in each statistical category. He possesses a beautiful blend of distance and accuracy off the tee and wields the putter in an effective manner.
