Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana is the setting for the the third leg of the FedExCup Playoffs for the BMW Championship. For golf bettors seeking an edge, there’s no shortage of angles when it comes to handicapping the tournament.
The event, which normally features the top 70 players in the standings, will see 69 men take the field after Henrik Stenson pulled himself out with a knee injury. The top 30 golfers will go on to compete in the Tour Championship at East Lake in the final staging of the playoffs.
At Bovada, Rory McIlroy headlines odds lists as a +500 favorite. Jason Day (+750), Dustin Johnson (+900), Jordan Spieth (+1400), Adam Scott (+1400), Justin Rose (+2200), Patrick Reed (+2200), Rickie Fowler (+3300) and Sergio Garcia (+3300) round out the top 10.
Crooked Stick is a very long course, and distance off the tee is going to be crucial to triumph there. Players who excel in par 5s will likely be in good shape come Sunday.
Day claimed the hardware at the 2015 BMW Championship, and he could easily do it again this time around. The Australian finished in a tie for fourth at The Barclays before coming close again at the Deutsche Bank Championship (tie for 15th). Day almost repeated at the PGA Championship in late July before falling short to eventual winner Jimmy Walker.
After excelling at the Deutsche Bank, McIlroy is the right man to be tagged with the favorite label. The Northern Irishman has a habit of winning at the same venues, and he won this tournament when it was last hosted at Crooked Stick in 2012. There isn’t a ton of value, but a wager on McIlroy this weekend looks like a safe bet.
