RBC Heritage Odds: JT The Betting Favorite

The PGA Tour resumes this week with players heading to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, for the 54th edition of the RBC Heritage. Harbour Town Golf Links, a Pete Dye design, has been featured on the PGA Tour since the 1960s and with the potential for a major championship hangover, a strong field is present on the Atlantic coast of the Palmetto State.

Known Pete Dye specialist Abraham Ancer has pulled his name out of the RBC Heritage hat as the Mexican appears to be struggling with some sort of injury. After withdrawing from the Valero Texas Open at the eleventh hour and badly missing the cut at the Masters, the Olympian will hope to be healthy enough for the Mexico Championship in two weeks’ time.

His loss is everyone else’s gain as a top-heavy field will make the short trip from Augusta, Georgia, to Hilton Head Island. Led by Justin Thomas, the tournament co-favorite at [Sportsbook not available for your region], a slew of contenders from the year’s first major championship look to shake off the heartbreak in Georgia.

Thomas has now gone over a year since his last victory on the PGA Tour as the world No. 8 looks to capture his 15th career title. Listed at +1200, our odds calculator gives the 28-year-old a 7.69 percent chance to find his way back into the Sportsbook’s circle.

This will be Thomas’ fourth RBC Heritage appearance, with his most recent resulting in a tie for eighth place in 2020. He has five top-10 finishes in 2022 alone and is simply playing too well to be held without a victory in 2022.

Course and Tournament Information

A shorter course by PGA Tour standards, Harbour Town added some distance in the offseason and now comes in just under 7,200 yards. Playing to a par 71, the property features tree-lined fairways, positional landing zones and small greens.

With this in mind, point A to point B golf courses such as Austin Country Club, Colonial Country Club and Waialae Country Club immediately stand out as possible venues with correlating factors. With one of those also being designed by Pete Dye, those who have taken to the architect’s work should be considered for this week’s RBC Heritage.

Needing to consistently club down to find the short grass off the tee, players will face numerous shots from 175 to 200 yards. What Happened In Last Year’s RBC Heritage?

Last year’s RBC Heritage turned into a blowout as wily veteran Stewart Cink finished four strokes ahead of his nearest competitor. Discovering the fountain of youth, this marked the then 47-year-old’s second victory of the season after earlier capturing the Fortinet Championship in Napa Valley during the swing season.

The American carded a four-round total of 19 under to outlast Harold Varner III, Emiliano Grillo and Collin Morikawa. He ranked first in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green, 20th in SG: Off-the-Tee, second in SG: Approach and fifth in SG: Around-the-Green.

Cink also finished the week fifth in driving distance, though that is hardly a prerequisite for a positional course such as Harbour Town. Listed at +10000 to go back to back, he will attempt to add his fourth RBC Heritage title to his playing resume.

2022 RBC Heritage Picks

Daniel Berger +2800:

Set to make his fifth appearance in the RBC Heritage, Daniel Berger appears to be flying under the radar. A poor finish to his Masters Tournament saw his name slide all the way down to a tie for 50th place as he was unable to conquer the harsh conditions of Saturday. Despite this, a shorter golf course where accuracy is rewarded should benefit the Floridian.

Let us not forget, Berger was the 54-hole leader by a significant margin last month at the Honda Classic before a final round derailed his chances of victory. The 29-year-old finished in solo fourth place at PGA National, then added a tie for 13th place to his resume at the Players Championship.

Long considered a top-five iron player in the world, if the FSU product can figure out these greens, he should have a wide path to victory. With previous outings of T-72, T-33, T-3 and T-13, Berger has impressed on these putting surfaces before and remains ever dangerous to capture his first PGA Tour victory since last season’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Webb Simpson +3300:

Whenever Berger is considered, Webb Simpson should be as well. The Sportsbook of this event in June 2020 after the COVID-19 layoff, the Wake Forest product has been held without a victory since. Seemingly healthy after dealing with a nagging back and neck injury, Simpson has slowly started to show signs of returning to his previous form.

Once a top-five player in the world, he has consistently made his hay on venues such as Harbour Town. With victories at Sedgefield Country Club and Waialae CC, the 36-year-old’s history in Hilton Head is unsurprising.

In addition to his victory in 2020, Simpson has seven top-16 finishes in 12 outings around Harbour Town, including a runner-up in 2013, a tie for fifth place in 2018 and a tie for ninth last season. After posting strong ball-striking figures in his last start on a similar venue, the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort for the Valspar Championship, the skills that helped him in Florida should translate to South Carolina.

Kevin Kisner +4000:

Similar to those mentioned above, Kevin Kisner is a short-course specialist perfectly equipped for the test that is Harbour Town. A South Carolina native, Kisner understands there are venues each season where he needs to up his game in order to possibly grab a victory. This is one of those opportunities as the former Georgia Bulldog arrives in stellar form.

A runner-up to Scottie Scheffler at another Pete Dye design, Austin CC, for the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, Kisner has since finished in a tie for 44th at the Masters. Striking his irons beautifully at Augusta National, he added to what has already been a strong season.

He has finished in a tie for third place at the Sony Open and solo fourth at the Players, both at venues that are leading indicators for success at the RBC Heritage. Set to make his 10th appearance in his home state, the world No. 27 has run into some trouble in recent years, missing the cut in both 2020 and 2021.

However, in a four-year span from 2015 to 2018, the Presidents Cup hopeful collected finishes of solo second, T-11 and T-7 and should once again find his name in the same neighborhood on the leaderboard.

Kevin Na +5000:

By now, you have seen a common theme with all selections and we will not be stopping now as Kevin Na quietly put together a very strong Masters Tournament. Leading the field in SG: Approach, the American also ranked first in driving accuracy and greens in regulation. All in for a tie for 14th place, if not for a third round of 7-over 79, Na’s week could have resulted in at least a top-10 effort.

This followed up an adequate showing at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play which saw him lose in a playoff in the Round of 16. Making his way out of the group stage at Austin CC, the early-season woes appear to be long in Na’s rear-view mirror.

If the case, Harbour Town is a golf course where his sharp wedge play and hot putting can propel him to his sixth victory on the PGA Tour. With his previous triumphs coming at the likes of Waialae CC and Colonial CC, Na also grabbed medalist honors at this past year’s Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club, presenting plenty of correlation.

Na possesses a somewhat mixed history in Hilton Head. Missing the cut numerous times, the 38-year-old’s volatility makes him an ideal outright candidate. In addition to those short visits, Na boasts finishes of T-10, T-4, T-8 and T-9 since 2011.

Matt Kuchar +6600:

One major championship occurs and suddenly everyone forgets what transpired two weeks ago at the Valero Texas Open when Kuchar finished as the runner-up. Gaining strokes throughout his bag except for off the tee, where he bled strokes due to his lack of distance, this marked Kuchar’s second consecutive impressive start.

Also finishing in a tie for 16th place at the Valspar Championship, the 2014 RBC Heritage victor arrives in some of his best form in recent memory. Combine this with a seventh place earlier in the year at the Sony Open and Harbour Town should once again prove to be a fruitful destination for Kuchar.

Perhaps the belle of the ball at the RBC Heritage, the 43-year-old will be making his 18th appearance. A perfect 17-for-17 collecting a paycheck, not only does Kuchar boast a victory, but also a runner-up in 2019 and nine additional top-25 efforts. With such history and in the midst of a possible career resurgence, it is not out of the realm of possibility that Kuchar could follow in the footsteps of Cink as this has long been a venue kind to oldtimers.
