Tiger Woods' Comeback Odds: Hello, Safeway Open

There aren’t many professional athletes who are as polarizing as Tiger Woods. Woods, the first athlete to become a billionaire and one of the most talented golfers to ever swing a club, has been a non-factor on the PGA Tour in the last few years due to injuries.

In early September the 40-year-old announced he was planning to return to the game he loves in mid-October at the Safeway Open. As of October 7, he was officially in the field.

Online sportsbook Bovada has released odds on how Eldrick will fare in his first action since August of 2015. Woods is rightfully a +4000 long shot to win the tournament and has a -165 chance to make the cut.

So, does the longtime world No. 1 have a legitimate chance this time around? I wish I could be more positive, but it’s not looking good. The sad truth is Tiger hasn’t resembled his former self since the highly publicized 2009 Thanksgiving incident with ex-wife Elin Nordegren that changed his life forever.

Since they came to light, Woods’ past “indiscretions” have clearly weighed on him to the point where the sport has begun the process of moving on without him. After all, golf is an extremely mental game, and Tiger simply hasn't been the same old Tiger in quite some time.

Performance-wise, Woods hasn’t won a major title since 2008 when he edged out Rocco Mediate in a sudden-death playoff at the U.S. Open. He made only six of 11 cuts in 2015 and possessed just one top-10 finish in that span. You have to go all the way back to 2013 to find Woods’ last PGA Tour victory.

The Florida resident has suffered from a litany of injuries of late, highlighted by a pair of back surgeries within the last year. I’m not saying Woods will never win another tournament, but the odds are stacked against him regaining his past dominance. Father Time is undefeated, and Woods is running out of options.

The Safeway Open gets underway at the Silverado Resort in Napa, California on October 13. The event marks the beginning of the 2016-17 PGA Tour season.
