Scottie Scheffler is favored in the St. Jude Championship Odds

FedEx St. Jude Championship Odds & Picks: Can't Pass On Scheffler

The FedEx Cup Playoffs have finally arrived, and for the second straight season the 2023 FedEx St. Jude Championship will kick off the postseason stretch. Welcoming the top 70 players from the regular season, TPC Southwind will reward those players who are accurate off the tee and capable with their mid irons.

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting board at +650 in his first start since The Open. Missing the cut in this event last season when 125 players teed it up, Scheffler’s short stint in Memphis represents his last missed cut on the PGA Tour.

Since then, he has rattled off 22 top-25 finishes in 23 starts and looks to catch the man atop the FedEx Cup standings, Jon Rahm.

Rahm follows Scheffler at +750 with Rory McIlroy close behind at +900. Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele round out the players listed below +2000 as they both look to conjure together a postseason run to remember and claim their first titles of the year.

With a loaded field, how can we pass up on Scheffler?!

Scottie Scheffler To Win +650

The world No. 1 is due for a win as he has been held without a trophy since the Players Championship in March. TPC Sawgrass represents a solid comp. course for TPC Southwind as players are required to position themselves off the tee and a hefty dose of mid-irons are presented.

That should be music to the ear of Scheffler who has been worlds better from tee-to-green than the rest of the competition. In fact, over the last six months, Scheffler has been on average one stroke better than McIlroy from tee-to-green who ranks second in this field. During this span, the Texan ranks first in total strokes gained, first in strokes gained tee-to-green, first in strokes gained off the tee, first in strokes gained approach and second in strokes gained around the green.

Will Zalatoris claimed this title a season ago without the aid of his putter which Scheffler may take solace in. Before his missed cut in 2022, he had rattled off back-to-back top 15s when TPC Southwind hosted a World Golf Championship.

Patrick Cantlay To Win +1600

Cantlay has been the best player on the PGA Tour to not win this season. When dating back to the very first event of the 2022-23 season, Cantlay ranks fourth in total strokes gained behind only Rahm, Scheffler and McIlroy.

He remains in this place when the timeframe is shrunk to the last six months and ranks third in strokes gained tee-to-green, third in strokes gained off the tee and top 15 on approach, around the green and both in terms of driving distance and driving accuracy.

The 31-year-old has made a habit of winning in the postseason the past two years as he claimed the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship in 2021 en route to the FedEx Cup title.

He backed things up by successfully defending his BMW Championship trophy meaning Cantlay has won three of the last six playoff events. TPC Southwind has not been too kind to the American in the past, but he does have a pair of top-25 efforts in 2019 and 2021.

Wyndham Clark To Win +4000

The U.S. Open champion continues to get disrespected in betting markets as he enters the postseason inside the top five in the FedEx Cup. Clark arrives in Memphis off a pretty solid swing in the United Kingdom where he struck the ball brilliantly but was unable to convert enough scoring chances to contend at either the Scottish Open or The Open.

Before this, Clark had rattled off wins at the U.S. Open and the Wells Fargo Championship in fields deeper than that at the St. Jude Championship. In his lone start around this par 70, Clark showed his skill both off the tee and on the green but was ineffective with his irons.

That should not be a problem this time around as he ranks seventh in strokes gained approach over the last six months and inside the top 25 of each strokes-gained metric over that same span.

Corey Conners To Win +6500

The Canadian flies into the postseason under the radar after a regular season that included notching his second career victory on the PGA Tour. In addition to his win at the Texas Open, Conners put together admirable charges at the PGA Championship, Wells Fargo Championship and Travelers Championship – all elevated events that resulted in a top-15 finish.

Conners has since tacked on a top 20 at the Scottish Open where he continued to flash upside on the greens. His iron play did not look like its usual self between the Scottish Open and The Open, but a return to the states and standard golf should allow it to return.

It will be needed as Conners has turned into one of the best drivers of the golf ball this season both in terms of distance and accuracy and ranks sixth in strokes gained off the tee over the last half year.

He ranks inside the top 25 in both total strokes gained and strokes gained approach and will just need all the pieces of his game to come together to notch his first-ever FedEx Cup Playoffs win.
