Guys & Bets (Episode 229): Gator Bowl, Premier League and Four NBA Picks

It’s the first episode of 2020 for Guys & Bets, and Joe Osborne and Andrew Avery are set to start the year off on the right foot with picks from college football, the Premier League and the NBA.

Let’s start in the Association as we have a marquee Eastern Conference matchup. The Miami Heat are the best home team in the NBA with a 15-1 mark. The Heat are coming off a disappointing loss at Washington and are looking to rebound as the banged-up Toronto Raptors make their way to South Beach. Joe has a bet on the line for this one.

Next up for Joe is a Guys & Bets darling, the Memphis Grizzlies. The Grizz are in Sacramento to take on the Kings in what could be a Western Conference final preview. Just kidding, relax. The Kings come into this game averaging the fewest points per game in the conference. Both teams have a lot of hope for the future, but as far as the present goes, keep expectations low. Much like Joe does for a certain total.

Joe has one more pick in the NBA, and it’s for the game at the Staples Center. The Detroit Pistons are on the third game of a six-game road trip and find themselves in the way of Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and the rest of the Los Angeles Clippers. The Clippers are looking to turn the page on a slow end to 2019. They’ve alternated wins and losses over their last eight games and sit 3.5 games behind the Lakers for top spot in the Western Conference.

Ninja starts the year off with a pick in the NBA as the now surging Utah Jazz are in the Windy City to take on the Chicago Bulls. After a sluggish start to the season, the Jazz seem to have figured it out, going 9-2 in their last 11 games to sit sixth in the West. As for the Bulls, they currently sit just outside the playoffs in the East as they occupy the ninth seed. Ninja’s play is on the line in this one.

Next up for Ninja is the Gator Bowl between the Tennessee Volunteers and Indiana Hoosiers. Tennessee come into the game red-hot. They’ve won six of their last seven and finished third in the SEC East. Indiana went 8-4 during the regular season, but didn’t defeat any teams that played in bowl games. But the Hoosiers’ losses were against ranked teams. Ninja has a side on the line.

Finally, Ninja has a play on the lone EPL matchup today. It’s the top team in the EPL, Liverpool, taking on Sheffield United. Liverpool has seven clean sheets in its last eight games and leads the EPL in goal differential at +33. Sheffield United is a stingy squad on the defensive side. They’ve only allowed 19 goals, tied for second-fewest in the EPL.
