Guys & Bets (Episode 266): Champions League, NASCAR, 2 NHL and 4 MLB Picks

It’s Friday so that means Guys & Bets is ready to get you set for a weekend of sports betting.

Joe Osborne, Andrew Avery, Iain MacMillan and Harry Gagnon cover MLB, NHL, Champions League and NASCAR, and expect the usual Friday shenanigans on today’s show. Plus your questions and feedback are always welcome in the chat.

Let’s get it going in MLB with Joe leading off. The Oakland A’s are in San Francisco to take on the Giants. The A’s are an impressive 13-6 and have a four-game lead in the AL West and a lot of it has to do with their pitching. Frankie Montas gets the nod this evening as he sports a 1.57 ERA. The last-place Giants aren’t looking like a team that can contend for much of anything this season.

Next up for Joe is the Houston Astros hosting the Seattle Mariners. To say the Astros’ stars have struggled this season would be an understatement. But can they turn it around and get hot like we’ve seen in the past? Tonight may be a good time to start as Yusei Kikuchi takes the mound for the Mariners and he has a trend on road games that could help you before you place your bet. The wager here isn’t on a winner but on a total.

Joe’s third and final pick is in MLB with an all-L.A. game. The Angels host the Dodgers and the red-hot Mookie Betts. The former Red Sox outfielder had four hits last night and three of them were home runs! He also had five RBIs as the Dodgers cruised to an 11-2 win. Clayton Kershaw takes the mound for the Dodgers tonight but it’s the bats on his team (other than Betts) that have struggled this season. Joe is looking at a totals bet.

Things are heating up in Champions League and that’s where Ninja is going for his first bet. Bayern Munich and Barcelona take the pitch in a quarterfinal match in Lisbon. This match features the only two remaining winners in the Champions League. There has been quite a bit of trash-talking leading up to this match, and Ninja will fill you in on his reasoning for his moneyline bet.

Ninja has a bet in MLB and it’s in the Mile High City with the Colorado Rockies hosting the Texas Rangers. The Rockies sit atop the NL West but are enduring their first slump of the season. They face Lance Lynn, who was excellent against them on Opening Day, throwing six shutout innings and striking out nine as the Rangers went on to win 1-0. The bet here from Ninja is on the moneyline.

Iain MacMillan has a pick for the Stanley Cup playoffs with the New York Islanders facing the Washington Capitals in Game 2 of their series. Barry Trotz is facing his former team and holds a 1-0 series lead. The Caps have a couple of lineup changes for Game 2 – Lars Eller returns to the team after the birth of his son, and Nicklas Backstrom will be out as he is in the concussion protocol. Iain’s wager for this game is on the moneyline.

Harry Gagnon starts off on the ice with Game 2 between the Montreal Canadiens and Philadelphia Flyers. Game 1 of the series was one of the better games in the NHL bubble with the Flyers winning 2-1. Carey Price made what could’ve been the save of the season, robbing Scott Laughton. Equally impressive was Philly’s netminder, Carter Hart, who made 27 saves in Game 1. With these two goalies, the UNDER is always an option and something to consider, but Harry has a pick on the moneyline for Game 2.

The NASCAR Cup Series is in Daytona Beach on the road grid for the Go Bowling 235. Harry has a top-three finish bet for a Toyota racer. Toyota has three guys in the top five to start the race: Denny Hamlin at the 2 spot, Martin Truex Jr. at the 3 spot and Kyle Busch sits in the 4 spot. Harry’s pick has an impressive road course record over his last eight races, and his career stats in road races are just as impressive.
