Guys & Bets (Episode 270): Texans at Chiefs Picks, Plus NBA, NHL and Two MLB picks

The NFL is back tomorrow night and Joe Osborne, Andrew Avery and Iain MacMillan will get your bets set for that game and more on today’s Guys & Bets!

Say that again, THE NFL IS BACK! The guys have picks on the spread, total and a player prop as the Kansas City Chiefs host the Houston Texans in the Week 1 Thursday nighter. Furthermore, with the NBA playoffs and Stanley Cup playoffs getting close to crunch time, the guys have bets for those as well. Plus a couple of MLB picks to whet your appetite.

First things first as Joe gets us started in the NFL. After an explosive playoff run last season that culminated with a Super Bowl win, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are set to defend their title while Deshaun Watson and the Texans are looking to avenge a playoff collapse for the ages last season. This will be Watson’s first season in the NFL without his go-to guy, DeAndre Hopkins, which opens the door for others like Will Fuller V, Kenny Stills, Brandin Cooks and newly acquired running back David Johnson. Joe’s play here is on the spread.

Moving to the NBA for his next pick, Joe is looking at a player prop, which he’s hitting quite well during the NBA playoffs. Jamal Murray was lights-out during the Denver Nuggets’ opening-round win over the Utah Jazz, but the emerging superstar has had it tougher against Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and the Los Angeles Clippers. After dropping a couple of 50-point performances in the opening round, Murray has put up 12- and 17-point performances against L.A. in two of the three games thus far.

Joe is looking at an MLB F5 play for his final pick on the show as the San Diego Padres host the Colorado Rockies. Hey, remember when the Rockies were good and they were the toast of MLB? Yeah, feels like forever ago. Meanwhile, Fernando Tatis Jr. and the Padres have become one of the darlings of the MLB season with a .614 win percentage and a lineup that has been mashing the ball. But, Eric Hosmer was put on the 10-day injured list, so that takes a little pop out of their lineup.

Ninja has a couple of picks on the show today and he’ll start off in the NFL. With Joe taking a spread bet, and Iain looking at a bet on the total, Ninja is looking at a Deshaun Watson player prop to cover all the bases. The star quarterback is fresh off a new contract extension as the dawn of a new season is upon us. Watson is part of the new breed of quarterback: he’s as dangerous with his legs as he is his arm. His scrambling is what set him apart back in college and he still has it now, and he may need to use it even more without DeAndre Hopkins around.

On to the diamond now as the Chicago White Sox are in the Steel City to take on the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates. Chicago enters the game tied for first place in the AL Central with the Cleveland Indians with identical 26-16 records. The Pirates took Game 1 of the mini two-game set between the clubs by a score of 5-4. Dane Dunning gets the ball for the Sox and JT Brubaker for the Pirates.

In last season’s epic playoff game in which the Texans held a 24-point lead over the Chiefs early in the second quarter, the teams combined for 82 points and the Chiefs of course did come back to win. But that was then and this is now. Starting a season off without any semblance of a preseason could have an impact on the timing for each offense and considering the changes the Texans went through on offense this offseason, it could take them longer than expected to get in a groove. Don’t sleep on Tyrann Mathieu and company on the Chiefs’ side of the ball. Iain’s got a pick on the total for the Thursday nighter.

Iain finishes things off on the ice as the Tampa Bay Lightning hold a 1-0 lead over the New York Islanders in the Eastern Conference final. Game 1 wasn’t even close as the Lightning cruised to an 8-2 win. Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov each had five points in Game 1 and the Lightning had six different goal scorers, once again showing their depth. The Lightning could just be too much for the Islanders all across the board.
