Breeders’ Cup Friday Betting Odds Update

The 31st Breeders’ Cup gets underway at Santa Anita on Friday afternoon with four championship races including the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff.

The other three Breeders’ Cup races on the card are the Dirt Mile, Juvenile Turf Fillies and Juvenile Turf, each with a $1 million purse. There are nine Breeders’ Cup races slated for Saturday including the $5 million Classic.

The Breeders’ Cup action on Friday kicks off with the Juvenile Turf, which drew a full field including a strong European contingent. The Euros have dominated this race, winning five of the seven editions.

The early favorite in betting odds released by Sportsbook is the Wesley Ward trained Hootenanny at 10/3. The colt started his career in the U.S., and then shipped overseas to win the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot in June over 23 foes. The colt was second in the Darley Prix Morny in his last start in France on Aug. 24.

Ward is seeking his first Breeders’ Cup win. The trainer is 0 for 16 with his Breeders’ Cup starters but has live runners in four of the races over the two-day championship meeting.

Goldencents likely will be the shortest priced favorite as he attempts to defend his title in the Dirt Mile. The colt paid $9.60 to win last year but is currently at betting odds of 10/11 to repeat.

The colt will race under the name of Leandro Mora, the top assistant to trainer Doug O’Neill, who is sitting out a 45-day suspension.

The last six Dirt Mile favorites have finished out of the money.

The second choice in the early betting is Fed Biz, who ran a game second to Classic favorite Shared Belief in the Awesome Again at Santa Anita, beaten just a neck. The Bob Baffert trainee is currently at odds of 9/2.

The Juvenile Fillies Turf is a wide-open race that includes four overseas invaders. Ward sends out Sunset Glow, who is currently the betting favorite at 3/1 at Sportsbook.

The filly also shipped overseas, running second in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot. Since returning, she has won the Sorrento and Del Mar Debutante.

The marquee event on Friday is the Distaff, which likely will determine the Eclipse Award for top older female. Untapable is the betting favorite at 14/5 according to Sportsbook.

The filly has won five of her six starts this year. Her lone loss is when she took on the boys in the Haskell Invitational where she checked in fifth.

Her main foe will be Close Hatches, who won her first four starts this year, but then did not fire her best in a fourth place finish in the Spinster at Keeneland. She is currently second choice in the betting at 4/1.
