The betting price on California Chrome continues to drop, with the talented colt now at 2/1 in Kentucky Derby futures odds released by Sportsbook. The colt has won his last four starts by a combined 24 lengths and is coming off a 5 ¼ length victory in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) on April 5.
Back in February horse bettors could have received 60/1 after his win in the California Cup Derby. That win came against state breds and up until that point he had not shown he could handle open stakes company.
That changed in his next start, a 7 ¼ length win in the San Felipe (G2) which earned the colt 50 Derby points. The win started his Kentucky Derby futures odds dropping, and he was listed at 7/1 going into the Santa Anita Derby.
After his romp in his last start the colt dropped to 3/1 last week, and in the most current odds released he has taken yet another drop down to 2/1.
The colt finished on top in the 2014 Kentucky Derby Points Standings with 150.
The 2/1 price looks short right now, as a field of 20 is likely and we have seen in previous years the betting favorite probably will be somewhere between 3/1 and 4/1.
For those looking to get a wager in early and lock in your price, there are plenty of other runners in the field that are currently offering more betting value.
Samraat, who lost for the first time when running second in the Wood Memorial (G1), is currently listed at 20/1 at Sportsbook. The colt won his first five starts including the Withers (G3) and Gotham (G3).
Cairo Prince was the Derby betting favorite back in February, but after checking in fourth in the Florida Derby (G1) his price has drifted upward and is currently at 14/1. The colt is trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, who saddled longshot Closing Argument, who ran second in the 2005 Kentucky Derby at odds of 71/1 off a third place finish in the Toyota Blue Grass (G1).
Candy Boy, who won the Robert B. Lewis (G2) before running third in the Santa Anita Derby, is listed at 20/1.
