Kentucky Derby Betting Preview

Lookin at Lucky leads a 20-horse field as the 4/1 favorite in this weekend’s 136th running of the Kentucky Derby. Will bettors be lucky if they bet on the favorite, or will an underdog steal the show again like 50/1 longshot Mine That Bird did at Churchill Downs last year? Lookin at Lucky has been the favorite at online racebook Sportsbook since Eskendereya was pulled from the race due to a bad leg.

Lookin at Lucky, who is trained by three-time Derby Sportsbook Bob Baffert, currently sits atop the odds at 4/1. Lookin at Lucky will start in the No. 1 stall, which means he could get caught up in the crowd heading into the first turn. Only 12 horses have ever won from the first position, and the last was Ferdinand in 1986.

Lookin at Lucky’s starting spot is still a lot better than his greatest competition in the race, Sidney’s Candy. He follows Looking at Lucky on the odds list at 6/1 over at Sportsbook, but he’ll be on the other side of the starting gate in the No. 20 post position. That’s proven to be a difficult spot to win from in the past, as only two horses have ever won the Derby from there. The last wasn’t too long ago, though, as Big Brown started in the No. 20 spot when he won in 2008. One other possible knock against Sidney’s Candy is that he’s never run on dirt before and the track could be a mess on Saturday with a ton of rain in the forecast. Famous trainer Todd Pletcher’s best chance at finally ending his long 0-for-24 Derby losing streak, Devil May Care, shares the next position on the odds list at +800, along with Awesome Act. [ For a list of Derby contests and SPECIAL BONUS OFFERS, {URL=https://www.oddsshark.com/horses/kentucky-derby-contests-offered}click here{/URL} ] Devil May Care is the lone filly in this year’s field and she’ll try to become only the fourth girl to ever win the run for the roses and the first since Winning Colors beat all the boys in 1988. It may have been more than 20 years since a filly has won at Churchill Downs, but don’t forget that a filly, Rachel Alexandra, won last year’s Preakness Stakes. If you’re looking for a value play on Saturday take a close look at one of Pletcher’s other horses in the Derby, Super Saver at +1200. He’ll be ridden by Calvin Borel, who rode Mine That Bird to an upset win last year at Churchill Downs and also rode Street Sense to a Derby win in 2007. Super Saver has shown great speed and racing ability on messy tracks in the past and that could give him an advantage on what should be a very sloppy track on Saturday.
