Nyquist Preakness and Triple Crown Odds

Just like a year ago when American Pharoah was quickly installed as Preakness Stakes and Triple Crown favorite in the wake of an impressive Kentucky Derby win, Nyquist finds himself in the same role tonight.

The 2-1 Derby favorite held off a late charge from Exaggerator to win in the fastest Derby time since Funny Cide in 2003 and was quickly made a prohibitive -170 favorite to win the Preakness in two weeks. They also posted him as a +120 favorite to win the Belmont Stakes.

Online sportsbook Bovada quickly posted those lines and one related the Triple Crown bid as well.

On the question, will Nyquist win the Triple Crown, the ‘No’ answer is a -400 favored position, while the ‘Yes’ would only pay out at +250 (bet $100 to turn a $250 profit).

With American Pharoah breaking the Triple Crown hex last year, it’s interesting to note that the past two Triple Crowns were back-to-back in 1977 and 1978 with Seattle Slew and Affirmed.

Attendance was more than 167,000, second highest all time behind last year’s gate at Churchill Downs. It marked just the second time that the Breeders Cup Juvenile champion went on to win the Kentucky Derby – Street Sense in 2007.
