AL East Betting Preview

The New York Yankees are the favorites to win the American League East this year, as they are almost every year.

But the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays, and maybe even the Toronto Blue Jays, are pining to give the Yanks a fight. Here's a quick look at the AL East futures board at TopBet.

New York won the East last year with 97 victories. The Yanks, as they always do, scored a ton of runs, but it was the starting pitching that eventually let them down.

So over the off-season New York addressed the issue by adding young gun Michael Pineda and  veteran Hiroki Kuroda to a rotation that already includes CC Sabathia and Ivan Nova. So it comes as no surprise that TopBet is pinning the Pinstripes as -150 favorites to win the AL East this season.

Boston is the second favorite at TopBet to win the East this year at +200. The Sox looked headed for a Wild-Card berth last year but then pulled one of the great choke jobs of recent memory and missed the playoffs for the second straight season.

Boston then cleaned house, changing managers and ridding themselves of some baggage. The biggest loss, though, is probably closer Jonathan Papelbon, and his loss is very likely to be felt. Boston will probably score a lot of runs again this year; it's just a matter of how many they'll give up.

Tampa rallied to steal that Wild-Card berth away from the Red Sox last year, finishing with 91 wins. This year, with Matt Moore on for the full season, the Rays may have a claim at the best 1-5 starting rotation in the league.

And to bolster the everyday lineup Tampa signed OF Luke Scott and brought back 1B Carlos Pena. However, they may have to start this season with BJ Upton on the DL. The Rays are getting +300 at TopBet to win the division this season.

Toronto would probably love to get out of the AL East and maybe give the Central Division a shot. The Blue Jays have finished at .500 or better five of the last six seasons, but nobody outside of Canada knows it.

What they could really use, though, is some depth through the rotation. TopBet is offering the Jays at +1,500 to win the East this season.

Finally, the Baltimore Orioles have some young talent, but not enough to contend. TopBet is listing the O's at +10,000 to win the AL East this season.
