Betts and Trout Are Early MLB MVP Favorites

MLB MVP Betting Odds May 14 2020

With a 2020 MLB season coming in the form of 60 games, oddsmakers have already released betting odds for which players will win the American League and National League MVP awards, with past winners Mike Trout and Mookie Betts tabbed as the faves.

The best baseball betting sites have Trout at +105 to take his fourth AL MVP trophy with the Los Angeles Angels while listing Betts at +285 to make an immediate impact with his new squad, the Los Angeles Dodgers, by winning the NL award.

Let’s look at each MLB league and determine some betting value for Most Valuable Player:

For the fifth year in a row of tracking odds for American League MVP, Angels center-fielder Mike Trout is the favorite to take home the hardware and, really, it’s hard to make a case against him.

Last season, he hit a career-high 45 home runs while knocking in 104 runs and posting an incredible 1.083 OPS that topped the AL. He did all of that in 134 games on a roster that was significantly lacking in talent outside of an aging Albert Pujols.

Now, the Angels are looking to make a playoff push in a shortened 60-game regular season and got some added talent/protection in the batting order with 3B Anthony Rendon and are hoping for a healthy season from up-and-coming slugger/pitcher Shohei Ohtani.

This award is all but Trout’s to lose considering he won it last year while missing close to 30 games and is nearly the consensus pick, but stats aren’t always the way to a voter’s heart.

Prior to the trade of Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the front-runner to win the National League MVP was Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Atlanta Braves at +400. Now, his odds have moved to +600 with Betts in the picture and oddsmakers have Mookie at +285 to take home the hardware.

Switching leagues tends to not work well for baseball players statistically but with the temporary adoption of the DH for all teams in 2020, this may be something to overlook this time around. If Betts pulls this off, he could become the first player since Frank Robinson in 1966 to win MVP awards in both leagues.

Betts is a solid option to at least put up similar numbers in Dodger blue. Over the last four seasons with the Red Sox, he has either hit at least 30 home runs or knocked in 100 runs. He’ll be joining a batting order that was just as formidable as the Red Sox when it comes to players who can crush the ball.

Making a Futures Bet

A futures bet is a wager made on events or milestones that will happen in time. The MLB MVP bet is a form of futures betting because you are making a pick based on an outcome determined at the end of the MLB regular season. The trophy is given out in mid-December and if you want to get a bigger payout, it’s best to lock in your bets sooner rather than later so you can take advantage of better odds. The closer it gets to the end of the season, the more the odds will change.

How to Read MLB MVP Odds

The above chart features the odds for each top player in the American League and National League. At your sportsbook of choice, the betting lines would look something like this:

Mookie Betts +285

Ronald Acuna +600

Christian Yelich +700

This means that Betts is the favorite since he has the lowest odds and the highest chance of winning the prop, according to oddsmakers. If you were to bet $100 on Betts and he won, you would get a payout of $385 – your original $100 is returned along with your winnings of $285.

On the other hand, if you strongly believe that Yelich is going to outdo himself in Milwaukee, a winning $100 bet on him would yield $800 – your $100 comes back along with your prize of $700.

Our Odds Calculator will show you how much you’d win based on the odds and amount bet.
