Manny Machado #13 of the San Diego Padres walks back to the dugout after striking out in the ninth inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Petco Park May 19, 2019 in San Diego, California.

Slumping Padres are a Tough Team to Trust Right Now

Following an 11-5 SU start, the San Diego Padres have dropped three contests in a row and seven of their last nine. The Padres welcome the Arizona Diamondbacks to Petco Park tonight, where sportsbooks opened the Padres as -137 home favorites with a total of 7.

Standout Stats

  • Luke Weaver is set to get the start for the Diamondbacks. Weaver (3-2, 3.16 ERA) has notched three straight quality starts, going 1-1 SU with a 2.25 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 20 innings of work. The 25-year-old has gone 3-0 with a 0.98 ERA over 18.1 frames in his last three road starts.
  • Chris Paddack will counter for the Friars. Paddack (3-2, 1.99) posted a 1.55 ERA over his first seven major-league appearances before giving up six runs (three earned) in 4.2 innings in his last start against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
  • Diamondbacks outfielder David Peralta has owned the Padres this season, going 13-for-26 in seven games against San Diego.
  • Arizona is beginning a 10-game road trip after watching three hitters at the top of the order – Adam Jones, Ketel Marte and Eduardo Escobar – finish a combined 0-for-15 with three strikeouts in Sunday’s 3-2 loss to San Francisco.
  • The Diamondbacks haven’t fared well in this series, going 1-4 SU in their last five matchups with the Padres.

My Best Bet for Diamondbacks-Padres

Diamondbacks moneyline

The Diamondbacks, who were available at +127 on the moneyline at Sportsbook as of this writing, are the best bet in this matchup in my eyes. With the way the Padres have been playing lately, I find them to be a hard club to trust right now, and home-field advantage doesn’t quite make up for their -137 price. Take Arizona.

The Diamondbacks are 1-4 SU in their last five meetings with the Padres. The UNDER is 4-0 in Chris Paddack’s last four home starts.home The OVER is 5-1 in the Diamondbacks’ last six road games.away
