Eric Hosmer of the San Diego Padres is congratulated by Travis Jankowski after hitting a two-run home run

Padres Have Been Playing Surprisingly Well Recently

The San Diego Padres are living in their traditional home of the NL West basement this season but Andy Green’s team has actually been playing pretty well over the past week. The Padres are 5-1 in their last six games while averaging 6.0 runs per game in that span. Those games did come against the Miami Marlins and Cincinnati Reds but beggars can’t be choosers. Can the Padres keep the momentum rolling when they take on the upstart Atlanta Braves on Monday?

SHARK BITES
  • Freddie Freeman is slashing .375/.437/.484 during his current 16-game hitting streak.
  • The Padres are 5-2 through the first 7 games of their 10-game homestand.
  • Christian Villanueva is expected to miss this game after suffering an ankle injury Sunday.

The typically struggling bats of the Padres have found their groove during their recent stretch of wins, slashing .276/.345/.398 in their past six outings. And nobody has been swinging a better bat than Eric Hosmer, who is 13-for-23 during that stretch. The big free-agent signing still is not slugging like the Padres were expecting but his consistent contact is big for a team that ranks 26th in the MLB in batting average.

The Padres will send Clayton Richard to the bump in hopes the lefty can continue his stellar pitching against non-division opponents. Richard has a sterling 2.66 ERA in six starts against teams outside the NL West compared to a dreadful 7.80 against divisional rivals. The 34-year-old has been a sturdy presence on the bump recently, posting a 3.18 ERA with 21 strikeouts to five walks in his last four contests.

The Braves will send veteran Julio Teheran to the mound after an inconsistent month of May. Teheran looked stellar to open May, allowing no runs in his first two starts, but then proceeded to post a 5.63 ERA in his following four. Luckily for Atlanta, this game comes on the road where Teheran is holding opponents to a .178 batting average away from SunTrust Park.
