Opening Odds Analysis

The Yankees opened as -124 favorites in Wednesday’s series finale and have been bet up slightly to New York -130. Atlanta is now going off at +120 on the road while the total has settled in at 8.5 runs since originally opening at 9 runs. The UNDER is 4-2 in Atlanta’s last six games vs New York.

Starting Pitchers Analysis

Ian Anderson has compiled a 4.70 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP with 19 strikeouts in 15.1 innings so far in 2021. The 22-year-old was more dominant in six starts last season when he struck out 41 batters in 32.1 innings with a 1.95 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. The Braves have won each of Anderson’s last two starts.

Corey Kluber is off to a rough start in New York with a 6.10 ERA and a 2.23 WHIP through his first three starts with the Yankees. Kluber has failed to record more than four innings pitched in any of those starts. The 35-year-old was an elite starter in 2018 with a 2.89 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP across 215 innings pitched, but injuries held him to only 36.2 innings pitched in 2019 and 2020 combined.

Atlanta News & Notes

With Ronald Acuna Jr. sidelined with an abdominal injury, the Braves recorded only six hits and one run in their 3-1 loss to the Yankees on Tuesday night. Acuna has been responsible for the lion’s share of Atlanta’s offense this season with 21 runs, seven home runs, 16 RBIs and a .419 batting average. He is listed as questionable to return to the lineup on Wednesday.

Freddie Freeman has been heating up with a .360 batting average over Atlanta’s last nine games. The Braves are 3-2 over their last five games since going 0-4 over their previous four. Overall they are off to a disappointing 7-10 start so far in 2021.

New York News & Notes

The Yankees got a strong performance out of starting pitcher Jameson Taillon and the bullpen on Tuesday night to grind out a 3-1 win over the Braves, snapping a five-game losing streak in the process. The keyframe of the game came in the bottom of the eighth inning when Aaron Hicks scored on a wild pitch and Mike Ford was walked to score DJ LeMahieu. It wasn’t exactly the offensive explosion the Yankees were looking for, but a win is a win.

New York has one of MLB’s best lineups on paper, but the team is off to an inexplicably slow start, ranking 29th in the majors with a .208 team batting average and 25th in runs scored with 3.63 per game. The Yankees have pitched quite well with a 3.44 team ERA to help keep the team afloat at 6-10, but this certainly isn’t what this squad had in mind for its start to the new season.

Betting Pick: Atlanta +120

The Yankees are too talented to stay in this offensive slump forever. But considering how poorly they are hitting and how poorly Corey Kluber has pitched this season, the Braves just offer too much value as an underdog here.
