The Blue Jays will immediately get a chance to defend their newly acquired lead in the AL East today as they send out Aaron Sanchez (11-1, 2.72 ERA) to face Chris Tillman (14-3, 3.47 ERA) and the Baltimore Orioles. Toronto is quickly gaining ground on other elite teams around the Majors after a hot start after the All-Star break.
Chris Tillman got absolutely blown up by the Rockies in his last start, just a day after I wrote an article about how he was the best money pitcher in baseball. Before that start, Tillman posted four straight seven-inning, one-run ball games.
Sanchez’ performance this year may be forcing the Jays’ hand to keep him out of the bullpen and forget about the proposed innings limit. The 24-year-old hurler is in the Cy Young conversation this season and has not given up more than two runs, since a start vs the O’s back in June in which he got shelled for six runs.
Sanchez has actually pitched much worse during daytime games, posting an ERA of 4.55 in five starts. Tillman, however, may be sweating coming into this one. The Blue Jays current lineup owns a .303 combined batting average against the O’s ace – fire emoji.
