Milwaukee Brewers are the Betting Favorites to Land Manny Machado

Machado Trade Betting Odds July 16

It’s not very often in Major League Baseball that a top-five player in the game is available to acquire but Orioles shortstop Manny Machado looks to be on the move sooner rather than later, with the Milwaukee Brewers as the betting favorite to land the four-time all-star.

Online sportsbook MyBookie has the Brewers at +225 followed by the Phillies at +350, the Yankees at +400, the Dodgers at +450 and the Diamondbacks at +800 to round out the top five.

Should the Brewers be considered the favorite?

It’s hard to say at this stage because each team on the oddsboard could offer the O’s an intriguing package of everyday players and prospects but the Brewers certainly seem to be the team with the biggest need. Injuries have taken a toll on the NL Central club that was off to a promising start and leading the division but its upward trajectory started to wane with the Chicago Cubs now owning a 2.5-game lead in the division standings.

Pretty much the entire heart of the order for the Brew Crew is on the DL (Ryan Braun, Eric Thames and Manny Pina) and while current 3B Travis Shaw has been decent this season (18 HR and 55 RBIs), he could easily be replaced by Machado or shifted to 1B. Tyler Saladino is the current Milwaukee shortstop and he’s been underwhelming in his first year with the Brew Crew after being acquired from the White Sox.

The Brewers were aggressive in the offseason to rebuild their outfield when they acquired Lorenzo Cain and Christian Yelich so bettors shouldn’t downplay Milwaukee’s recent track record to wheel and deal. With a playoff drought spanning the years since 2012 and having made the postseason only twice since 1982, the Brew Crew are desperate to get back to October baseball.

Yanks and Red Sox May Wait For Free Agency

Machado has been linked to the Yankees since the beginning of the season but it seems far-fetched for New York to give up a lucrative package of prospects and starters to acquire the Gold Glover when they can just back up the Brinks truck in the offseason for the pending free agent. Anyone who follows baseball knows that the Evil Empire can offer the most money and endorsement opportunities in the New York market so, at +400, the odds aren’t great value when you consider they’ve pretty much got at least an AL wild-card spot locked up for 2018.

As for the Red Sox, it would seem like overkill at this point for Boston to give up anything substantial for Machado since they already have the best record in the majors. The Sox also have Xander Bogaerts locked in at shortstop and if they made this trade, it would be with the understanding that Machado signs a long-term deal, which is something Boston has been very poor at in recent years (See: Carl Crawford, David Price and Pablo Sandoval).
