Opening Odds Analysis

Starting Pitchers Analysis

Luis Garcia will make his second start of the postseason after a disappointing performance last time out. He lasted just 2.2 innings against the Chicago White Sox in Game 2 of the American League Division Series after giving up five hits, three walks, and five earned runs. The 24-year-old had an 11-8 record through 30 games (28 starts) in the regular season with a 3.48 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP.

Nathan Eovaldi has started twice in these playoffs, including in the AL wild-card game against the New York Yankees and in Game 3 of the ALDS against the Tampa Bay Rays. The right-hander carries a 1-0 record in those two outings as he gave up a combined seven hits and three earned runs while striking out 16 through 10.1 innings of work. In the regular season, Eovaldi posted a record of 11-9 with a 3.75 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP through 32 starts.

Houston News & Notes

The Astros came into the ALCS on a roll, especially on the offensive side of things, averaging 7.75 runs per game in their ALDS win over the White Sox.

Though they managed just five runs against the Red Sox in Game 1, they got a much-needed offensive explosion from Jose Altuve. Held without an RBI through the first three games of the ALDS, the second baseman replied with three hits, one home run, and three RBI in Game 4. He carried that momentum into the ALCS, hitting a two-run homer and the eventual game-winning sac fly in another three RBI performance.

Michael Brantley also hit a single to extend his playoff hit streak to 16 games – tied for the second-longest streak in postseason history and just one back of the record.

Boston News & Notes

The Red Sox were the clear underdog going into the ALDS against the Rays and they’ll be in the same position against the Astros in this series. Despite the odds, Boston put up a spirited fight in Game 1 as they nearly mounted a ninth-inning comeback.

Kike Hernandez had a big night at the plate with two solo home runs, including one in the ninth that brought Boston within one. Hernandez is now tied for the team lead in both home runs (2) and RBI (6).

Starter Chris Sale made his second start of the playoffs after a disappointing showing in Game 2 of the ALDS where he allowed four hits and five earned runs in just one inning. The left-hander was much better this time out though he lasted just 2.2 innings, surrendering five hits and one earned run.

How Houston Will Win

As always, the secret to the Astros’ success is their offense: they ranked first in the majors in the regular season (5.39 runs per game) and they rank first again in the playoffs (7.20 runs). With Altuve finally rolling as well, it’ll be even harder to stop Houston’s stacked lineup.

How Boston Will Win

The Red Sox could hope to shut down the Astros’ offense, but that seems like wishful thinking. The better bet would be to fight fire with fire and try to outhit them. With the second-best offense in the postseason (six runs per game), it’s not impossible.
